Upgrading from a Radeon HD 4830

Tue Oct 23, 2012 9:20 am

So, I'd like to plug my computer into the TV and play some cross platform games like Xcom and Dishonored with a better framerate and with more visual quality than my PS3 offers. The goal is to get at least 1280x720 with 4x AA and AF, or 1080p with no AA and 4x AF, running at least 40-50 fps. I think I have narrowed my choices down to a Radeon 7770 or a 6850. I can either for about $100. I'm leaning towards the 6850, but the 7770 is smaller and runs cooler, and I have a mATX case. Which should I choose, or should I choose something from Nvidia instead? It's been a long time since I've been in the market for an upgrade.

Go for the 7770.

I agree. The 7700 and the 6850 have about the same performance with the 7770 having a lower power draw and a new design.

You'll get a lot more speed in the future from the 7770, due to it being a 100% new arch.

If you're open to Nvidia, the GTX 650 Ti and GTX 660(especially this one) are also worthy choices, though I believe they draw more power than a 7770. Given you like to plug your PC into the TV, I imagine it's a fairly low power draw build, so the 7770 might be the better choice overall.

I'll echo what everyone has said thus far. An HD7770 is a great choice for you. It seems AMD is getting the gaming stuff in order with their drivers as well, as noted on the front page yesterday.

I'd be curious to know how dishonoured works out for you at 1080p.

I'm sitting on the fence at the moment, trying to decide if I can get away with a 7770GHz (I get a free copy of Farcry3) for the HTPC, or whether I need something more powerful and should stick to what I have for now.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

I can let you know later this week from my 6850.

+1 for the 7770 btw. Same performance, same price, almost half the power draw as a 6850.

Here's a factory hot-clocked Radeon HD7770 1GB for $135 -15MIR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102993

Here's a factory hot-clocked GeForce GTX650Ti 2GB for $180-10MIR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130841

Here's a factory hot-clocked Radeon HD7850 2GB for $195 -10MIR:

Here's a factory hot-clocked GeForce GTX660 2GB for $230:

Radeon HD7770 1GB should work fine for your application, but the Radeon HD7850 2GB is a good value for more serious gaming.

I would strongly recommend stretching for a HD 7850. Probably far more card than you need - a fair bit faster than an HD 5870, while the HD 7770 is probably about even with an HD 5830. I think right now the HD 7850 is the best bang for the buck card on the market.

Alas, if you don't need that much card....

For $100 shipped, I can live with the 7770. The benchies show its about even with the 6850, not the 5830. Considering I'm moving up from a Radeon 4830, and won't be asking too much of the card, I *should* be good to go. We'll see.

I highly recommend checking the card length against what will fit.
I had to take backéswap a 6850 when it was too long for my case. The Nvidia 560 was about an inch shorter.

Aside from the more advanced feature set and lower power draw and heat output, the HD7770 is startlingly not much faster than an HD4830...

Benchmarks to prove it? From what I've seen its about twice as fast.

Yeah I'd be incredibly surprised if it was that slow. Hell, I'm pretty sure my dinky little GTX 650(About... 15% or so slower than a 7770. Woudla gone with one of those, but I want to give AMD a few more years on the driver front with ol' GCN and derived archs before I try 'em out. especially after, well, RAGE) is faster than an HD 4830

Direct comparison might be hard. Here's HD 4870 vs HD 7770

I'm sure the HD 7770 is appreciably faster than the HD 4830 and it might even be twice as fast. HD 7770 seems to be not so very much faster than HD 4870, though, except in Starcraft II.

That's pretty much what I'm saying- 'not much faster' :). Take it into context with current mid-range GPUs, and the HD7770's (and similarly gimped GT6x0's) haven't really improved much over the high end from years past outside of feature set.

The HD5770 was a good card in it's time, but the HD7770, it's a hard sell when considering only performance. Good drop in replacement for the HD4830 though, considering the OP's requirements.

A lot of games are becoming more multi-threaded(As I recently discovered with Saints Row The Third. That game is... poorly optimized in general, if you look in the INI they all but admit it in the notes. It is very much made for at least four threads, which is actually less than the consoles provide). If your frame rate is still giving you issues, a quick drop in quad-core Athlon II X4 or Phenom II X4 might be the best bet for ya.

HD 7770 will yield some performance gains over HD 4830, but it will be held back by that CPU. HD 7700 consumes a lot less power at load though.

Idle too. The 48xx series was a bit poor in idle, and given the 4830 chips were the most rejected of the reject RV770s that still fuctioned, a lot, though far from all, have kind of terrible power draw(Same thing with 5830s).

Way to give Vrock buyers remorse everyone....

You'll have to search for actual benchmarks that this is based on (and its Tomshardware) but this chart shows the 7770 to be apprciably faster than the 4830. From what I've been able to track down, the 4830 would be slower than a 5770/7750 so you do the math; not to mention it doesn't support DX11. Plus AMD seems committed to improving performance on GCN cards in the future.

A CPU upgrade is definetly warranted now that you've got your GPU shored up.

I'm thinking the AMD FX-4300 is right up my alley, once the price drops to $100 or so.

This is a man that knows how to live on the edge .... the trailing edge

I kid, honestly. You need only as much as you need. But, for an FX-4300 you'll need AM3 or AM3+ socket, yes? Do you have one of those sockets already? If so, then I'm more trailing edge than you! :o

As for the video card, I still the the HD 7850 is the king of the hill, boss of the toss, best value for the dollar. And it'll last for years or four years - whichever comes later.

Heh. Yeah, there was a time when I tried to keep up, but PCs just aren't that important to me anymore. I do actually have a AM3+ board, it was a recent purchase back when I wanted to upgrade my RAM. I got an open box board and 8 gigs of memory for $80. I'm all about the cheap route these days: any upgrade has to be a hundred bucks or (preferably) less.

If it's not my gaming box, this is where I'm at- granted, I wind up donating old parts to my brother more often than not.
