"Device can perform faster" USB 2.0 Issue

As you can see, Windows occasionally informs me that certain USB devices aren't plugged into high-speed ports. My motherboard is the ASUS Maximus Formula, which only has USB 2.0 ports, so I guess I must have installed a driver incorrectly to be getting this message. Note that in Device Manager, only two of the ports are listed as "USB2 Enhanced Host Controller." I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the problem. And what's up with all those USB Root Hubs? What are those for? Gerbils, halp meh!

Re-run the Intel INF Update Utility, if you haven't already. Should fix all your USB port issues.

Where are the problematic ports? Are they in the motherboard's port cluster, on the case front panel, or on an expansion slot bracket? Are you using any USB extension cables (and how long are they if so)?

Bad cabling (e.g. case front panel wiring that aren't quite up to USB 2.0 spec, or sub-standard/overlong USB extension cables) can cause all sorts of strange USB behavior.

I installed the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility for my mobo from ASUS's support site, but it didn't seem to do anything (installer ran fine, but it completed instantly).

The device was plugged into the mobo's port cluster when I got the message, but after trying all the other ports, including the front-panel ports, I haven't been able to recreate the problem.

Sooo maybe there's nothing wrong after all? I hate it when things like this happen; I'm totally anal about my computer and little notifications like this bug the heck out of me.

Any changes in the INF files won't be recognized until after a reboot (at least on XP).

There's a fairly complicated handshake that occurs when a USB 2.0 device is first plugged in to maintain backward compatibility with USB 1.1 ports while also allowing the devices to negotiate the faster USB 2.0 High Speed mode if they both support it. Maybe dust in your USB ports caused a flaky connection, resulting in a blown USB 2.0 handshake and subsequent warning. Couldn't hurt to clean out all of your USB port connectors with a little compressed air...
