I'm in the market to replace my aging Dell 2407FP, and I don't know where to begin. I'm tempted to jump on one of the Korean IPS displays, but I'm hesitant to buy one if it's a hassle to calibrate straight out of the box. I wouldn't mind getting a new Dell IPS monitor either, but if my money can be spent better elsewhere, so be it. Add to the fact that I don't fully understand the difference between the competing technologies (LG's AH-IPS vs Samsung's PLS vs blah blah blah) and it makes my decision making a bit harder since I don't know what I should be looking for.

My monitor is used primarily for gaming (1920x1200 resolution), and obviously surfing the web, as well as the occasional photo-editing. I don't have a problem staying with a 24" monitor, but if the price is right, I'll make the jump to 27". Unless I can get an amazing deal, 30" monitors are prohibitively expensive. With all that being said, I absolutely refuse to downgrade to a 1080p monitor, so the resolution must be at least 1920x1200. If I need to upgrade my EVGA GTX 460 in order to drive the new monitor, then so be it.

What say you fellow gerbils? What should I buy?

I'd go with a Dell Ultrasharp again. I generally dislike Dell with a passion but if there is one thing they do well it's Ultrasharp screens. I bought my first 2001FP in early 2004 (almost 9 years ago!) and it's still chugging along just fine at my buddy's house. My current U3011 is also awesome. I would look at U2713. Or maybe get a U241x. I had a U2410 before and it was an excellent all around screen.

Any particular reason you're looking to move away from the 2407WFP? I've got an '08 model and it's still going strong, and a friend is using a 2407 and is having no problem. Unless you want to jump to 120hz+ or to a bigger panel, or if the current monitor is dying, I'm not sure it's entirely worth it

The 2407FP works just fine, and I'll probably keep it around as a second monitor or hook it up to the kids' computer. Since I can afford it, I would prefer a monitor with overall better image quality.

Those 27" Korean screens using the LG-Philips S-IPS 6ms 8-bit panels are really good, especially for $350.

If that panel is good enough for Apple to sell at $999 then I sure as hell don't have a problem recommending it for image quality reasons.

The usual caveats about Apple warranty and support apply, but is that honestly worth £649? (100% rhetorrical question for anyone who is not silly-rich).
