DOOM's anniversary

Mon Dec 10, 2012 6:44 pm

DOOM was released on December 10th, 1993 -- 19 years ago! I listened to the original DOOM soundtrack today to commemorate the occasion. Anyone else keeping the DOOM spirit alive so many years after its initial release?

EDIT: the number. I can't do math.

Still playing today, using the Doomsday Engine and whatever high-res texture packs I can scrape out of some of the smellier corners of the 'Net. Still love me my double-barrelled shotgun, though for mental therapy it's a quick IDDQD, IDFA, and carnage with the rocket launcher.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

19 years ago, shirley?

I played a few maps of E1 this morning with Chocolate Doom (PC Speaker sound and Adlib music, just like the first computer I played it on) and also grabbed the shareware ZIP for Doom v1.1, the very first version I played back in either late Dec '93 or Jan '94.

Just got done playing through Memento Mori 2 last night using GZDoom + Brutal Doom. You really must check out BD - it's an excellent mod with improved weapons, sound effects, better AI, and more.

Overdoes the blood though. I get it's supposed to be a joke, but come on. :|

*shrug* BD isn't for everyone, but it's such a huge improvement to me that I won't play without it anymore. Rip and tear!

Maybe you'd like Beautiful Doom better? ISTR it doesn't have quite so much blood but has other graphical improvements.

DOOM was probably the first game I got so addicted to that I stayed up all night playing. It was a truly groundbreaking game that changed the course of the PC gaming industry.

Noticed my son has recently gotten back into playing it (and the Descent games) too...
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

IDKFA and i thought it stood for "id Kick F****** A**"
IDDQD and i thought it was id and the frat Carmack went to

Duke Nukem 3d was much less imaginative, except for the god mode cheats.

dnstuff = hot loot
dncornholio = invincibility, though most kids these days probably dont know where that came from
dnkroz = another god mode (old apogee game, i think)
dncashman = i make it rain
dncosmo = cosmo's cosmic adventure reference

man i miss old apogee adventure games. biomenace? heck yeah! crystal caves, keen, old duke games, ROTT, secret agent, monster bash, hocus pocus, raptor, alien carnage... sheesh.

IDKFA was "keys, firearms, ammo"
IDFA was "firearms, ammo" ... if you wanted to search for keys and play the level as intended you used IDFA

One of my favorite levels was "Dead Simple" in Doom II. Talk about an adrenaline rush. Click the button, run, shoot, never a second to catch your breath. I would IDCLEV07 all the time, because it never, EVER got old. And the music was perfect to keep your heart racing.

There's no telling how many hundreds and hundreds of hours I spent playing that game and its variants and mods. To this day I think it's the gold standard of level design.
A most unfortunate, Freudian, double entendre is that hotel named "Budget Inn."

IDSPISPOPD

I haven't played Doom in a while. My favorite was playing over a V.FC 24.0 modem with a friend and setting myself to -turbo 250 without him knowing. "What the... HOW ARE YOU MOVING SO FAST?!?"

I convinced my buddies to buy the same modems so we wouldn't have compatibility issues. We'd connect via RIPTerm and then pop to DOS, start up Doom and we were good to go. I was interested in the updates as far as DoomGL and glDoom back in the day, but didn't follow anything else really.

I can't see these links at work, but...

http://www.doomworld.com/linguica/level.php?id=4490
http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames/sounds/doom2enh.txt

I'm sure it's rather pedestrian compared to what's out there now, but I liked 'em! Hell, looks like there were some others...

BASICENH.WAD
DOOM1ENH.WAD
DOOM2ENH.WAD
DEATHENH.WAD

Ah, I remember now. You had to split them up so they would load more nicely in the RAM on the Gravis UltraSound cards. Oh yeah, and the dm2mus1, dm2mus2, dm2mus3 ones too. Man, talk about nostalgia!

clone, I look at Doom as more of a pure shooter. I like the simplicity. You get a gun, you shoot stuff, things try to kill you. Some of the current fps's lose me because they try to tack on too much "depth" in the thinking that forced tutorials and escort missions and junk like that makes a game better.

I think StarCraft's a great game, too, and different strokes for different folks, but Doom and Wolf3D will always have a place in my heart due to being bleeding edge at the time and being bloody in a time when people were decrying these murder simulators.

Should have popped up periodically on the top line of his screen that "Green is turbo!" (or whichever color you were). I did that the other way around with my cousins, letting them go at turbo 250 and me at stock speed because I was better at deathmatch. This was back when we used only the keyboard, no mouse or joystick.

I remember having to put in correct init strings for our modems[1] so they'd work right. That was an enormous pain.

[1] Mine was a USR Sportster 14.4 external plugged into a serial port with a 16450 UART. Couldn't run it at full speed because that UART couldn't keep up, which would cause packet CRC errors. Can't remember what theirs was, maybe a Zoom.

Zoom Telephonics VFP 24K, it was a V.FC or V.FAST protocol which was a stopgap before V.34 was ratified. Got the 24K one because it was cheaper than the 28.8K. And yeah, we totally worked out the right init strings. I'd have to look that junk up again, all I remember was ATA and ATDT.
