Importing Local Group Policy - Windows 7

Tue Dec 11, 2012 2:27 pm

Okay so I made a windows 7 image, but for some reason the local group policy didnt migrate with it. I created/exported a local .msc group policy file, but I can't figure out any way to import it to the new machine. I don't see anything in the %systemroot%\system32\grouppolicy folder (i also checked grouppolicyusers and syswow64 versions). I don't see why you can export the .msc but you cant IMPORT it as well. I'm probably missing something really straight forward, so I wanted to pick your guys' brains.

strange, when i export then import the new file it doesnt appear to do much (and the file is only 1kb). when i export and import via the gui it says it doesnt and says "there is not enough memory available to load the database..."

whatever, im just gonna try to recapture the image.

I take it you didn't use the MMC snap-in Security Templates to build the GP?

i used mmc addin for group policy, then created a local gp that applies specifically to my kiosk account. strangely enough, when i went to go look at the machine i was using as the source for the image, the group policy file didn't run on there AND it was disassociated with the original account that it worked on. that was probably because of the sysprep process i ran. anyways, i just re applied the GP and rebuilt the image. it works great now on other computers. next time, i'll need to use the security addin to build a template from the start. thank you for the heads up! none of the group policy/AD/SCCM "specialists" were willing to help. they all got pretty pissed when they heard i built a local image (it's off our domain and using their image would require me to completely redo THEIR group policy settings and uninstall default software etc) and used that as a reason as to why they couldnt/wouldnt help. oh well, its fixed now.
