Benchmark software for file transfer speed

Thu Dec 13, 2012 11:36 am

I noticed on Youtube, a software for testing file transfer speed as below. Could anyone tell what is the name of the software? I appreciate recommendation for any such benchmark software.

That looks like HD Tune (http://www.hdtune.com/) which is used for testing disk speeds.

That looks like HD Tune.

HD Tach is another one that I've used in the past, but it is apparently no longer supported (and not compatible with Vista/7/8).
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Thanks for the responses.
I installed a SSD recently and it appears to be faster than hdd. I want to know in quantitative term as to how much faster. Is there any other similar benchmark software?

There are quite a few. There is no reason to benchmark though. Benchmarking an SSD only shortens the lifespan of the NAND inside. If it's fast, leave it alone.
i7 6700K - Z170 - 16GiB DDR4 - GTX 1080 - 512GB SSD - 256GB SSD - 500GB SSD - 3TB HDD- 27" IPS G-sync - Win10 Pro x64 - Ubuntu/Mint x64 :: 2015 13" rMBP Sierra :: Canon EOS 80D/Sony RX100

If the test is done in read mode only, the impact on SSD lifetime is minimal. Even a write test isn't really a cause for concern, unless you're writing to the entire disk.

That said, unless you're comparing different SSDs there's not much point. Not sure why you'd want to bother benchmarking your SSD against a mechanical HD.

And it's also the same basic "UI" as the CD/DVD Speed applet that came with older versions of Nero Burning ROM.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I want to know how much faster SSD is than HD at this point, and will be using it to compare different SSDs.

What about crystaldisk ?? I have used it to test HDD's and my lone old corsair original frce 60gb drive that maxed out at around 250 mbs now it's around 200mbs with 12 gb of space left. I use it for my OS and a few programs.
2600k@4848mhz @1.4v CM Nepton40XL 16gb Ram 2x EVGA GTX770 4gb Classified cards in SLI@1280mhz Stock boost on a GAP67-UD4-B3, SBlaster Z powered by TX-850 PSU pushing a 34" LG 21/9 3440-1440 IPS panel. Pieced together 2.1 sound system

I have reviewed info on CrystalDiskInfo but it does not appear to provide read/write speed test.

Crystal disk does read and writes in Seq, 512k, 4k, 4k QD32, and test sizes from 50mb, 100mb, 500mb, 1000mb 2000mb and 4000mb sizes.....depending on how much you want to stress and wait on your equipment and tests.

Note i was too impatient for the 1000mb test comparing HDDs on my 3 rigs so i believe i did the 100mb test just to get a idea on speed comparisons of what i have in my machines.

It is CrystalDiskMark not CrystalDiskInfo. I know, it can be confusing just looking at those 2 names.

A really quick and dirty test is to use Robocopy on a folder with a bunch of files. But again, as noted, if you are writing files to the SSD, you will be reducing its lifespan since flash memory has a shorter write cycles than magnetic disks.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

OK, it's CrystalDiskMark. Thanks for correcting my misunderstanding.
I will probably limit the size of file for benchmarking to 100MB not only to save time but also because of warning by Flying Fox. It is hard for me to believe that testing a couple of times regardless of the file size used shortens the life in any significant way but testing by 100MB will serve the purpose of speed comparisons as stated in vargis14's post.
