The best radeon 7770?

Sun Dec 16, 2012 5:06 pm

I recently was browsing through the latest system guide, and I saw the 7770 was the GPU for the econobox. I'm just curious, but what is the best in performance/cooling wise for the 7770? I'm interested in crafting my own computer soon, and I want it really similar to this most recent econobox, mainly because of my budget and my uses for it.

Most people here would probably recommend MSI, Asus, or Sapphire branded cards. Powercolor is definetly a brand to avoid since they are typically loud despite being cheap (who'da thunk). Asus probably offers the best quality coolers, but they're also typically on the expensive end because of it. MSI has also been doing a really good job in the "cool and quiet" department lately. And I've always been happy with the quality of Sapphire cards. This MSI card features dual fans which should keep temps and noise low (as is typical with MSI). At $100 after MIR it's also the best bang-for-the-buck until Dec. 20th.

I wouldn't worry too much about who offers the highest factory OC as all these cards can probably be pushed to around 1100MHz core without increasing voltage. What you really want is a good quality cooler on top; more heatpipes (or just heatpipes in general) is always a good indicator of a better cooler, having dual fans doesn't hurt either. You can simply google various cards for reviews and/or read newegg.com customer reviews. I'm sure others will chime in that have hands-on experience with specific brands/models of 7770's also.

I'm using a Powercolor HD7770 right now which I bought recently for $122. Contrary to DPete's comment, I haven't had trouble with Powercolor cards, but instead had trouble with my last Sapphire card, which suddenly became slow for some reason (it's not the PSU either). The thing is, just stick to a well-known brand. Whether the card serves you well for the entirety of its time with you or not is up in the air. Nobody has a perfect track record. Obviously, some companies have better track records but you will also most likely pay more for that peace of mind. Again, there are no guarantees.

I purchased that MSI card back in June of this year, and have been happy with it. You can hear the fans when gaming, but they aren't too loud. Their pitch and level could compare to a noisy laptop fan, but again only under full load.

The SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100358VXL Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB comes with a 1100mhz clock and a mem overclock also. $140 at newegg
The best would have to be the ASUS HD7770-DCT-1GD5 Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB with a 1120 clock ans a little memory bump also. That will run you $150.
Both cost a bit too high in my opinion for what your getting. For just 20-25$ more dollars you can get a HD 7850 1gb card that will run circles around a 7770 along with a 256 bit mem bus over the 128 bit mem bus giving you twice the memory bandwidth.
Here is a HIS H785F1G2M Radeon HD 7850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 for 169$

I highly rec the 7850 over the 7770 since they cost between 169 and 175$ now....heck for 175$ gigabyte makes a nice card with a factory overclock!

Yeah, except that you can get a 2GB card for $170 also (until tomorrow). I'm sure there will be many more deals for the 2GB versions around $170 through the end of the year. I would pass on the 7850 1GB for reasons listed here.

Vargis does have a good point though, watch how much you spend on a "nice cooler" and where the next tier of GPU's starts. I too would have a hard time spending $140 on a 7770 when 30 bucks gets you much more performance and still a perfectly good cooler.

I've had excellent success with many Sapphire graphics cards over the years (going back to the clearance-priced Radeon 9500Pro that after a BIOS flash became a Radeon 9700). I'm 0 for 2 with PowerColor.

There's not a huge amount of differentiation among the Radeon HD7770 cards. They all do quite well for their low price.

I will also agree with DPete27's recommendation against a Radeon HD7850 1GB when the 2GB versions are almost as cheap and won't have a seizure when you load Skyrim's HD texture pack.

I like Gigabytes 7-series cards for their quiet coolers. I had a 7850 first (which featured two fans), and I traded that in after coming upon some extra money for a 7950 from them as well (3 slightly smaller fans). I don't hear them at all, even when gaming (though the game sounds may be muffling that). I can only assume that their 7770 cooler, with one large fan, is similarly quiet but I have no first-hand experience. Their 1GiB 7770 starts at $130 on Newegg, I believe.

I have a 4870 1GiB from them that is still trudging along nicely, though the fan is clearly becoming louder and louder as the years wear on.

I got the Gigabyte GV-R777D5-1GD because it was just $115 when I bought it in May.

Just saw this on newegg...since we're talking about $170 upgrade alternatives. The Zotac Nvidia GTX 660 is going for $170 after MIR also. It performs on par with the 7870 too which costs roughly $215 (same as the typical price of GTX 660's). The only catch is that it's sold out at the moment. Definetly something to keep an eye on though if you're interested. The MIR lasts until the end of the year.

That's still obviously $70 more than you'd be spending on a 7770 though. The MSI 7770 card I linked earlier for $100 is still your best choice IMO if you're sticking with a 7770.
