LG DVD burners $12.99

Sun Dec 23, 2012 6:38 pm

Was just in the Downers Grove IL Frys this afternoon and they have OEM LG DVD burners on special for $12.99. Not sure if it is chain-wide or just the DG location. Sounds like a good time to stock up on spares.

They are also "M-DISC" compatible, which I had never heard of before today (had to look it up). Apparently this is a proprietary type of DVD media that can be burned only on newer LG DVD burners (supposedly readable on normal drives though). M-DISC is claimed to have a 1000-year archival storage life. Given that I'd never heard of it, and the lone listing for media on Newegg is a single disc for $5 I doubt I would ever make use of this feature.

DVD burners have been under $20 for quite some time. Now that Blu-ray drives are routinely under $50, I don't see a reason to get an optical drive that only handles DVD and CDs.

I do - save $30 if you don't want BluRay capability :D

Ditto. Especially for those of us who A) don't own any Blu-Ray movies; and B) run Linux on some of our systems (where Blu-Ray capability would be largely wasted due to lack of full support for the DRM). I do own a Blu-Ray burner (for archival backups), but see no reason to have one in every system.

My first CD-RW drive burned at 12x, 10X for RW and read at 32x. It cost an amazing $179 back in 2001.

Stunning I say! My Bluray reader was $89 in 2010.

I'm just happy that SATA means no more futzing around to ensure that DMA mode is still active and it somehow hasn't dropped back into PIO mode.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

My lone optical device is a USB DVD burner now, can't recall the last time I used it. Zero plans to ever buy a Blu-ray device (or media for that matter).

My main PC has both an LG Blu-ray drive and a Pioneer DVD-106S DVD-ROM with an EIDE <--> SATA bridge.

Those EIDE Pioneer drives were really good back then. Mine was the 104 model I think...If I remember right. And It still works in a friends comp.

I keep the old optical drive around both because it still works well and because the slot-loading mechanism is a bit of a novelty.
