Sun Dec 30, 2012 4:57 pm

my system specs:

4GB ram
Intel Core i3 3.4 GHz
Asus P8 HLE 61-M
Screen resolution : 1024 x 768 (or i might upgrade this too soon.)

A GTX650 is an ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE upgrade over a GT 220. The GT 220 was a low end card from 2009 and didn't exactly perform well even then. Take a look at this TR review for some numbers on current games. You'll have to do a little extrapolation from the GT250 and GTX260 numbers where available - I'd estimate that a GT220 performs somewhere about a quarter that of a GTX260. Please note that not all the games used will include numbers for the GTS250 and GTX260 because they won't even run on those cards at the tested settings due to software incompatibility.

From there, you'll need to compare numbers from the GTX650 review to those numbers to see how it compares... or just take our word for it that it performs somewhat less than a GTX660 but more than a GTX560.

As for your specific games, the GTX650 will run them quite well, particularly at your stated resolution. Of which... you probably want to upgrade that too. 1024x768 is so last century . We can help recommend a monitor too; just let us know what your budget is.

Yes, I agree - that's going to be a stupendous upgrade in every way. It'll go from slideshow on low settings to very playable on higher settings, depending on resolution.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

So are you saying that i might only choose to GTX 650 or GTX 660? I think i might still think about jumping to 660 because it has very big gap of price to 650 and im short of budget. hahaha

About the monitor, honestly i never tested any other kind of sizes of monitors. I have seen other monitors but for sure those "huge" monitors isnt really that comfortable to me. This size of monitor is just fine, but i want to try something bigger, but not really that big, maybe in the mid of this 1024x768 and big monitor (i dont know what is the size of huge monitors haha) Other thing that really doesnt want me to upgrade is about my budget. So for now, maybe ill just stick to 1024x768. But if ever i upgrade using GTX 650 video card, what monitor should i get? or what size? and please dont give me that too damn expensive monitors because id still save for that. haha

You are confusing the GTX 650 ti with the GTX 650. The Ti uses a cut-down GK106 die with 768 SPs and 64 TMUs, while the non-Ti has a full GK107 die with 384 SPs and 32 TMUs, half that of the GTX 650 ti. The both have the same memory interface width and number of ROPs.

Both are quite power efficient and a significant upgrade over the old GT 220, but the GTX 650 ti is significantly more powerful than the non-ti. Blame Nvidia's terrible naming scheme for that.

Both will be more than adequate for 1024x768, but if the OP is going ahead with getting a better monitor with a higher resolution I would recommend them towards the GTX 650 ti rather than the non-ti (if they can afford it).

Ok, it seems that the GTX 650 and GTX 650 Ti are my only options here (since that two are the only cards close to my budget)
Can you tell me if that two cards would be compatible on my system? how would i check guys if that graphic cards are compatible to my motherboard?

*EDIT: this is my power supply : Corsair VS650W 80+ 650W

I also found out that my motherboard has:
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16
2 x PCIe 2.0 x1
3 x PCI

and the GTX 650 has PCIe 3.0..

Would that work? Am i looking at the right areas to know if my mobo and soon to buy GPU is compatible?

PCI-E is backwards compatible, it'll run just fine in a PCI-E 2.0 slot.

I run a DDR5 650M (which is very similar to the desktop GTX 650 non-Ti) and it runs modern games pretty well at the laptop native resolution of 1366x768.

I occasionally pipe it out over HDMI to a 1080p television and it's reasonable on that too. Heavier games (like BF3, Borderlands2 and Planetside2) run at 1920x1080 on high detail settings at around 30-40 fps, if you sacrifice a few of the goodies like AA and shader effects, you can normally get a good, 60-ish frames a second out of even the those games.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

I have darksiders 1 with a much weaker CPU, and I've had few to zero problems running it with my GTX 650. Mine was mildly(About 100 or so MHZ, maybe even less on the core. Memory wasn't touched) OCed out of the box, though. Can you link to the model you plan to purchase?

He meant a link to the specific model at a retailer that you intend to purchase.

Like so:
The cheapest GTX650 I find on NewEgg at the moment: EVGA 01G-P4-2650-KR GeForce GTX 650 - 109.99 (99.99 w/ MIR) + 6.98 shipping

Or just for the heck of it, the cheapest Ti I see on NewEgg: Galaxy 65IGH8DL7AXX GeForce GTX 650 Ti - 134.99 (free shipping)

Sorry i gace you wrong link. By the way, im here in the philippines and to be honest, im not really used to order products online since not all of the online sellers ship their product here in our country. so i just go to computer shops here in our place and i buy there.

--I checked the price of GTX 650 Ti and i found out that Ti is far more expensive in GTX 650. So im thinking ill just buy GTX 650. All of my computer parts i listed above are 1 year old maybe this GTX 650 is a "just" upgrade for my video card? What you think guys? Also, is it possible that i could overclock my GPU? Would overclocking this GPU boost its performance "greatly"? And if i overclock this, would i need GPU cooler? (Im really not used overclocking but im just curious if i could do so in this graphic card).

Unfortunately, that means most of us can't give you a hand with pricing. I'm sure somebody can find something, though.

The Radeon 7770 and 7750 should also be within the price range of the GTX 650 and perform (roughly) similiarly with some give or take. (See anandtech's Bench results: GTX650 vs. 7750 and 7770). When shopping around, look for deals on these cards as well.

Do you mean is the video card the only thing you need to upgrade in this case? Then yes. If you're asking if the only thing that will see improvements is GPU performance, the answer is also yes. Otherwise, please clarify.

tigidig3x wrote:

A quick Google search tells me that there is some decent headroom in a GTX 650 (source: BitTech). As usual, your mileage may vary but you might get lucky. As for if it is worth it, you're probably going to fall into one of these two scenarios: if you're getting unacceptable frame rates, overclocking is unlikely to help much; or, if you're on the verge of playable frame rates a decent OC just might push it into the realm of playability. Not that I think you have much to worry about at 1024x768.

tigidig3x wrote:

Maybe. Though if you end up buying a cooler, you're probably better off spending the money by going directly to the next card up like the GTX650Ti or a Radeon 7850. You'll get more performance than you would have with a simple overclock and have more confidence in the stability of your system. Not to mention you can also overclock those cards too! Now, I'm not trying to convince you to spend beyond your means... just putting it out there.

Thank you for your effort in writing all of that man. Really big thanks to your insights. Maybe i will be just doing good with this Graphics card. Even at my monitor resolution is fine with me,i like to play demanding games but in a simple manner way. Even a $2 mousepad would fit for me. So i think i will go with this one thanks all of you guys.! =)

This is a good upgrade that'll run all those games on all but the most crazy-high resolutions but I'd really recommend spending the few extra bucks to get a 650 Ti. This isn't like AMD/Intel tacking "GHz" or "K" on the end to sound cool and vagulely enthusiast-friendly, the Ti is a vastly superior card with a different architecture--basically a stripped-down 660 Kepler GPU--and it's both very powerful and very power efficient, something that nVidia has been doing wrong until the current generation.

It's been out for about three months now and you're starting to see them discounted. I got mine for $140 on Newegg and rebate roulette can have it for even less if you're patient.
