Just finished all the books of "Gregor the Overlander" series, by Suzanne Collins. It's supposed to be a children-oriented fantasy novel (the main character is 12 years old), but I really enjoyed reading it - much more enjoyable than the Collins' "Hunger Games" series. Too bad that the last book ended in such disappointing way, basically making you believe that the story will definitely continue in next book... But of course there is no "next book" and last time I've heard Collins was working on totally different book with totally different topic

The last Robert Jordan book is coming out Jan 8th. Brandon Sanderson wrote it with his notes, of course. A long odyssey of this series which started in the 1980's will be coming to an end. I thought overall the Sanderson books were better than the last 4 or 5 that Robert Jordan wrote. He ruthlessly closed plot threads and seemed to capture the spirit of the earlier books. I enjoyed Towers of Midnight quite a bit.

I've been wanting to read and reread some books I read while in school, so I ended up with a stack of books for Christmas:

To Kill a Mockingbird
1984
Fahrenheit 451
Slaughterhouse Five
Catch-22
Cather in the Rye
An Abundance of Katherines

Already tore through Fahrenheit 451 (again). Probably reading Slaughterhouse Five next.

Ah! The Lost Fleet - you've made to the (current) end.
How long did that take you? I found that I couldn't put them down, so it was one a day for me.

Bought and read Legacy of Heorot over the weekend and started on the sequel last night. Picked them up because the guys making this game (Unclaimed World) mentioned the book as inspiration for the game and it looks to be exactly "my kind of thing" - so I had to see where they were starting from. Pretty impressed, good read, wish I had read it when I was younger.

Before that I just finished the 3rd book in the Shift series (prequel to the Wool series) and I'm really looking forward to the conclusion series, Dust.

Rereading 1632 on my Kindle. I originally read this years ago on the CD that came with the hardback version of the 6th Honor Harrington book, using lynx to render HTML onto a 14" CRT monitor. It wasn't as horrible an experience as you might think - I think I had SVGATextMode[1] crank the monitor's refresh rate up to 85 Hz so I wouldn't get a headache.

It seems a lot more Heinlein juvie-esque wish-fulfillment (probably with less character development at this early stage) than it did, but it's still a fun read.

[1] Gods was this a long time ago[2], well before the Linux console got a framebuffer driver. I wonder if any Linux distros even still include STM anymore.
[2] Right about the time I met my wife, in fact, so in late 2002.

I'm reading Confessor by Terry Goodkind. I got it at half price books for 90 cents. What's more interesting than the book so far is the amazon reviews. I don't know how he managed to destroy his series. The first 4 books were actually quite good. But I figure as bad as it is, I can still slog through it. I read all the other ones.

For those who don't know, this fantasy series has veered into Ayn Rand propaganda in the last few volumes. Truly bizarre, but I think he is trying to use his fantasy story to "enlighten us".

I just finished The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. This is probably the second best book/series I've read in recent years. His Mistborn series was pretty good, too.

So far, Patrick Rothfuss has blown me away with The Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear.

I totally lost interest in Goodkind after book 5 or so.

Do it. It's some of the best modern Fantasy. I also really enjoyed The Demon Cycle series of books by Peter Brett.

"The Way of Kings" by Brian Sanderson (the same guy who finished the Wheel of Time after Robert Jordan died). I like the complexity of his world, but he does take enough time to explain things so you have a connection with the characters... I would put it above the level of "A Song of Fire and Ice" in complexity, but well below the "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series (where even the author doesn't know WTF is happening half the time).

Edit: Ah, I see gigafinger beat me to the punch. Yeah, I'll echo his praise for the Way of Kings, and the next book in the series is supposedly coming out later this year.

Our Better Angels, about the decline of violence.

http://www.amazon.com/Better-Angels-Our ... ter+angels

It's an interesting read so far, making the case that this is probably the most peaceful era in human history and that the decline thus far, from pre-state societies to now, is that fairly drastic and constant. I'm digging it because it's pretty snarky about the Rousseau school of anthropology that I've never been able to stand but it doesn't attempt to whitewash the less nice parts of European history either.

Just recently finished reading "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline, yet another book about using a virtual reality world... Was a pretty good read, I liked all the '80s culture references (games/music/movies) used there, especially the ones that I've "missed" in my lifetime. If you're into such stuff (like a global "Massively Multiplayer Online Virtual Reality") and if you still fondly remember all the games (pen & paper/arcades/consoles) you've played in '80s - I highly recommend it. Also, it is directly related to the topic of "escapism" (something which was also recently discussed in TR forums), so if you're also into such topic - you might also find it interesting to read.

Best book ever written. Ernest Cline needs to write more just like it... Or make it a movie, a video game, 3 sequels, etc... I CAN'T GET ENUFF! DON'T LET IT END!!!!

I'm reading through the list of Hugo/Nebula joint winners. Just finished Dreamsnake and Paladin of Souls, currently on The Fountains of Paradise. I started reading the list because of Ender's Game.

The books so far have all been tremendous. They're obviously all well-written, but there's been at least one novel idea in all of them, something that will compel your imagination to embrace the world the author created.

I'm nearing the end of the novels, and I don't think the other categories will keep me for more than a few months. Are there any other joint award lists such as this one? I'd prefer sci-fi/fantasy, but if the books are on par with these I'll read pretty much anything. I tried a couple of google searches to no avail.

I am almost finished with my annual reading of The Lord of the Rings. This year I sprang for the 50lb hard cover with 50 illustrations by Alan Lee. It makes a great disciplinary tool!
