Laptop Won't Return to Sleep

Mon Jan 07, 2013 2:04 pm

With our corporate power schemes, if a laptop is put to sleep by closing the lid, and subsequently wakes up remotely for updates, Thursday night scheduled virus scan, etc., it will not return to sleep when the process is done. This is with the lid remaining closed.

So a typical thing to see is the laptop is put to sleep at end of day on Friday and on Monday it is fully on and likely has been on for most of the weekend. Not good if you are trying to be green about your power usage. The laptop can be put back to sleep by opening and closing the lid but that is not of much use.

Any ideas on how to improve this?

Thanks
G

Which OS are you running on these machines, and are most of them the same make/model?

Does the method you're using the wake the machines allow you to issue console commands after maintenance is complete?

If so, you can try issuing this command after everything is done:
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep

If the machine ends up going into Hibernate, you may have to turn it off.

It is Windows 7 64, same behaviour on Dell and Lenovo laptops.

There are power schemes set by Policy so I was hoping to make a request for a change to the power scheme if there was a setting that fixed this. I don't think I would be successful trying to get them to issue a scripted sleep command. All they do is wake up the machines at specified times and then the automatic updates and scheduled virus scans start up independently at their own scheduled times.
