Or did we improperly intervene in the growth/maturation process of an early AI concept? I've got a 15YO daughter who, once she hit high school this past fall, started spouting off like a sailor. In the case of Watson, is it a "phase" that further growth will overcome or is it a terminal condition that can't be "taught out".

Head-scratchers all.

I'm at 83K on my '10 Subie and still on the original brakes. Shop wants $900 to do all four corners. I can buy all the parts for $450 and replacing brakes is child's play. If you're willing to read the shop manual you can halve the cost of repairs that don't include delving into the engine computer.

Every time I'm tempted to rage-quit on a car repair, I remind myself that it's a machine with parts that can spin up to 100-130 times per second and operate perhaps 5,000 hours between major maintenance items in order to move 1.5-2.5 tons of mass to speeds in excess of 70mph...while I and/or loved ones will be sitting in the center of it, surrounded by many other machines that may not be maintained or driven with the same skill as mine.

Even so, car repairs are expensive.

I see you've driven in rural Vermont. On any given day I can expect to hear terminally-shot and metal-grinding brakes and suspensions with broken springs and non-existent bushings, not to mention all of the body groans from 20+ YO cars.

We get some of that here, although not nearly so bad as the Midwest and Northeast because CDOT mostly relies on gravel and mag-chlor, and the corrosion effects aren't as brutal as straight salt.

We're straight rock salt or high-strength salt brine. You only see gravel on the dirt roads.

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here through Thursday. Try the veal.

that sounds wonderful but artery clogging :)

on a similar vein; 1 cup vanilla ice cream, 2-3 oz of 99 Bananas (99 proof liqueur) blended into a milkshake makes a very taste dessert, but watch out because, yeah, 99 proof.

I don't think I'd have those together, but individually both of them sound delicious.

Borderlands is an amazing game. I got it just before Christmas in a Steam sale, but only started playing a week ago. I wish I had gotten it sooner, as it's just so much fun.

Also, JBI, thanks for the Maine suggestions.

Welcome to TR!

I used to be a Model M fanatic (have a couple of Unicomp Model M clones), but these days I've decided I prefer keyboards with Cherry blue switches.

And another redneck car salvager learns how not to tow a Subie.

Was bringing daughter home from a sleepover when we came upon a flatbed truck with a Grand Cherokee on the bed and an old Impreza wagon on the hook and on its rear wheels. She asked me why the Subie's front wheels were spinning and I told her that the Subie should be on the bed, the Grand Cherokee on the hook, and that Bad ThingsTM were about to happen. Not more than a mile down the road I started smelling burning tranny and about a quarter mile after that there was a complete smoke show, squealing (locked) tires, and a fresh puddle on the road. Hope he wasn't planning on selling that Subie for anything other than suspension & body parts. With the front diff integrated into the tranny, my guess is that the entire driveline is toast.

Idiot probably thought he was towing a FWD car.

My problem is that idiots misassign me tickets in the middle of the night. Too early too be awake, but too late to go back to sleep.

I won't say any names, but someone is getting hell in today's meeting.

Make sure the gear selector is fully in Park. If it's a stick, check the neutral/clutch interlock switches.

I would start looking for a bad ground point or a corroded ECU electrical connector.

If the starter solenoid on the starter motor itself is clicking and not turning the engine over then either the starter motor or the wiring between the starter motor and the battery or battery and chassis is borked. I suppose the engine could be seized but that is very unlikely.

Commonest one is the starter solenoid is sticky and a bit of percussive maintenance may get it to fire up. Given new battery it may be that the connections are not good (someone didn't put them back on properly), this would also explain the key fob problem. I would first check over the connections I mentioned looking for loose ones and probe them with a meter looking for volts across the connection whilst someone else turns the key.

Totally bizarre Power Supply event:

My computer, with my old PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750,wouldn't boot up when plugged into the left-side wall outlet, which I thought was faulty.(looking from my front door toward the window).

With my new PC Power & Cooling Turbo-cool 1200 installed,it booted up like nothing happened. This Turbo-Cool 1200 PSU makes miracles happen,is all I can say.

Maybe it's got a bad ground, and the new PSU is more tolerant of that? Might want to test it...
