STEAM selling SOFTWARES?

Sat Jan 12, 2013 6:52 am

As of just now i have noticed quite a handful of software's for sale in steam never knew they did this :o
software's for production and editing have been up on sale
kinda weird considering up until 2011 100% was games
not a bad move it might be a good alternative to the windows app store if they offer more variety of them :P

what you guys think :-?

They started doing it at some point in 2012... I think it was probably this time last year... just around the steam xmas sales. I don't mind it, though so far haven't actually purchased anything as of yet... but have looked at a lot more software applications than I would have normally because of it. I like the concept.

I have no plans to buy anything off it, but it's as good a place as any to get it. Mind you the only software I plan on buying (if any) is on the Windows Store.

Why not? They've got one of the best digital software distribution networks in the business, might as well leverage it to sell stuff other than games too.

The next couple of years could get interesting. It looks like Steam is pushing into multiple areas that are outside their traditional (games) niche.

They have been doing it for months. Most of my artist friends have bought editing software (like ACDSee) off of steam. They like the fact they won't have to worry about mis-placing their software keys.

Interesting. Hopefully they don't use Steamworks...Valve really needs to be better about listing which products have it and which don't, there are a number of indie games I've passed up in Steam sales because I knew I could get it DRM free from GOG or direct from the developer.
