IPS Light Reflection

Sun Jan 13, 2013 9:24 pm

Hey guys,

This is probably a pretty bizarre question, so I figured someone on here might have the expertise.

So, I was watching some Deep Space 9 on my DLP TV, streaming it from my computer when I noticed the reflection from my computer. Now, the primary monitor is my Korean IPS panel, displaying this background (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/deta ... rning.html). The monitors were in extended, not clone. So the DLP was showing DS9.

Here's the weird part. The reflection of the DLP was normal. The colors looked perfect. The reflection of the IPS panel was violet or purple. I changed the background to eliminate that variable and the reflection was still purple. So the entire IPS screen, even the white areas, are purple in the window reflection.

Any physics majors out there have an idea?

Likely the coating on the glass is the main cause. A refraction from the coating and a refraction from the actual glass interacting with each other give that purple-ish reflection.

edit: derp, i didn't read closely enough. The theory still applies though. Coatings on screens and glass cause that.

Here's a long-form description of the theory. Eyeglass wearers and photographers see lots of this, the typical antiglare coatings tend to shift the remaining reflections to either green or purple.

Could also have something to do with polarization, I suppose...
