TechRepot Mobile

Tue Feb 01, 2011 5:43 pm

I'm just curious... will there ever be a mobile app (for say iPhone) developed for the Tech Report? It would sure make it easier to keep up with everything.

Overall, TR 3.0 is much smoother on my phone, compared to the old design, and besides, I never had any trouble with TR in landscape mode.

Tapatalk is great, and it's free for the site. I use it for a couple of forums, and it's like a native version of a forum on your phone (iPod in my case).

Can't say I understand the point of starting a mobile website at this point. I'm sure there was a time when mobile phones were incapable of a lot of the speed and compliance that a desktop browser has. But that was years ago. These days, with smartphones and their respective browsers being as powerful as they are, I'd argue that a mobile version of TR is a little late to the party.

Not that it's a bad idea, I just think that one's time could be spent doing more useful things.

I disagree. The current site is optimized for roughly a 1024-pixel viewing width and even then is packed pretty tight. I find it quite tiresome to navigate on my Nexus One because first I have zoom in to accurately pick out a link, then either zoom out or swipe the screen back and forth repeatedly to pan, then zoom in when another link catches my eye, etc.

A mobile version of the site would be much welcomed.

Just promise that there will be an option to disable the mobile site via a cookie. My phone and Tablet have top notch browsers that never have problems with full versions of sites and I /hate/ mobile versions of web pages.

TBH, I've found that scaling the 1024 site width to the 800 pixels of my phone in landscape fits and works perfectly, but that's because the Android browser is really very good.

I would absolutely hate to be using a Blackberry to read the site though. Or any kind of old/budget mobile still running the first-gen 480 x 320-ish touchscreen phone screens of a few years back. Or any phone with a crappy browser. Or a small phone with a teeny-teeny screen.

Hell, maybe the mobile site is a good idea; APPLE CONTROLS THE WORLD. APPLE WON'T MAKE A BIG PHONE BECAUSE OF THUMB.

No, I'm aware of it. I was just taken aback by a flamboyant anti-fan's ability to steer anything towards the object of their ire. Guess I shouldn't be.

Mobile apps (such as the Newegg mobile app) are a pain in the behind. I find that the only exception to this is the iPad forums, but even that is annoying at times.

Straight-up, just give me the website pages, and let me scroll and navigate them with Safari or whatever browser happens to be on the device. I'll manage, thank you very much.

Good stuff Cyril, but please give us an option to disable the mobile version of the site. My phone has a top notch browser and the non-mobile site renders and acts just as good as on my desktop.

As stated, I can see why mobile versions of websites are useful for smaller screens, etc. Personally, as a rule, I abhor them.

It frustrates me to no end when I go to load up a website, only to have it automatically direct me to the mobile (aka, gimped) version. Can anyone tell someone with virtually no web design knowledge why some sites force you to use the mobile version and if there is a way to get around this?

It's forced on people because of bad design. As for getting around it, the only real way I know is to change your browsers ID string. Android and QNX/BB10 based phones have 3rd party browsers with this ability and I'm sure the iPhone does as well.

We store a cookie on your phone to save your preference. So if you choose "see full site," that's what you'll get next time you visit from that device.

Thanks. I'll look into the browser ID string thing. I noticed that in the new version of Chrome I have on my Android that there is a setting that allows you to "request desktop site". But it seems you have to select this for each individual url (webpage) on the same site...
