Decent low-budget 23-24" screeen?

Wed Jan 23, 2013 8:35 am

Hey gerbils. I don't see any new enough threads to be relevant now - so I'll ask the hive-mind:

What's a decent screen cheap screen these days?

I've been asked to find a:
  • 1080p IPS, PLS, VA (not TN) panel, at least 23"
  • Matte screen AND matte bezel
  • Height-adjustable stand
  • Analogue (for laptops) and DVI at least. DP and HDMI are nice but really not necessary

Suggestions please! I stopped caring about budget screens ages ago since we've moved to Ultrasharps at work for the most part (we have a few nasty Asus models too) and I'm running Korean QHD at home.

You can check out the dell S series

I have the S2240M and it is an eIPS, gloss finish,1080p, however it is 21.5", and I went with this size because it is a tighter pixel pitch and provides a crisper image.
I think I got it on sale for $165?

Edit - it has vga and div, however no HAS and no VESA :|

Edit 2 - What's a decent screen cheap screen these days?........I stopped caring about budget screens ages ago since we've moved to Ultrasharps"

Decent, and cheap, that will be a tough find.

Old NASA rule:

Faster/better/cheaper. You can have any 2.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Heh, yeah - I figured
  • eIPS instead of 8-bit
  • No displayport or HDMI
  • lesser brand like Acer or Iiyama* instead of Dell or Samsung.
  • Don't need fancy "features", OSD, or various modes. Hell, a scaler isn't even required

However, it seems that when manufacturers start speccing cheaper panels they also drop the decent stands and plaster everything in gloss plastic.
It's not like matte finishes even cost any more, they must think we actually want gloss :\

You can thank Cupertino for that.

Even they don't use glossy plastics anymore; anything glossy in an Apple product is glass. It's probably Apple's fault that it started, but it's certainly not their responsibility anymore. They don't even have plastic enclosures for the most part. The only one I can think of is the bottom of the Mac Mini, which is not glossy.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

How low is "low"? Do you need it to be ~$150 to be low? :o

Because when the U2312HM is doing $180-$200, I seriously don't think you can get any "lower" to be acceptable of acceptable IQ. The Asus PA238Q is doing near $200 now. Anything lower will be TN and/or glossy stuff. I personally think it is cheap enough.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

No, $200 is fine - since that's around €150 or so, hopefully.
What won't work are the $500 screens in the Ultrasharp price range that I would normally consider at this size.

The PB238Q looks promising, actually. I don't suppose anyone knows of 24" 1920x1200 screens? I'm assuming they're all phased out now and the downgrade to 16:9 has permeated most product ranges.....

The U2312HM is an Ultrasharp. What were you smoking? Those eIPS are well priced. The U2412M should be near $300 when on sale, and that's 1920x1200. Both are good IMO. Not sure how often dell.co.uk runs sales and I think with VAT and the general "screw Europeans" pricing you may not get that low. Hope I am wrong. For the 24" 1920x1200 equivalent of Asus that's the PA248Q.

The U2312HM and ASUS PB23Q are both equally good choices. I've never seen the U2312HM for under $200 but you can get both for around $220-230 on Amazon.com. Another option if you don't need the extra features (USB ports and portrait mode) is to look at the AOC i2367Fh. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824160158 I've seen this monitor get good reviews on a number of web sites and at $180 on Newegg it's a better price than the Dell/ASUS options. Also the Dell S2340L and the HP 2311Xi are also lower featured options you could look at.

Any of the monitors I suggested would be decent options for you. It comes down to which features you need, how much you are willing to pay and just which ones you like. My own preference is for the PB23Q and U2312HM due to the features and the matte screen. I've currently got a glossy screen and it's difficult to use during the mid-day when the sunlight is coming in through the window.

The Canadians were definitely having a blast with the U2312HM selling at C$180 (plus tax) during Christmas. :-?

Must have been nice.. I did hear that Dell had the 2312HM on sale for $200 on Thanksgiving day but it was apparently a one day only sale as it was back to the normal $259 price on Black Friday. Well, normal for that time. Now it seems that Dell is asking a lot more and even Newegg has bumped up the price. Only Amazon still has it for the lower price (about $230 with shipping) for now.

I wonder if this means Dell is permanently increasing their prices as I've never seen the U2312HM at the >$300 price in recent times.

Well, it doesn't have a matte bezel or height-adjustable stand, but I'm rather fond of my ASUS VS229H-Ps. I have two, and my girlfriend had one; gorgeous little monitors. They make a 23" version, named, oddly enough, the VS239H-P. You can find it for around $170 if you look around.
