Can cut budget from other things; especially the PSU. 600W (as others have said) is overkill for this machine. I frequently go for case/PSU bundles for low-end machines, as while the PSUs certainly are garbage, they usually work well enough for a low-powered machine like this. (^・ω・^ )

Though that GTX660 is worrying for a bundled PSU, so you'd have to pick carefully.

You don't even need to change much; you can frequently find mid-range or older 120GB drives for ~$80-90 on sale.

I agreed with this too, though, you know? Both of you are arguing against a point I never made or supported (the idea of reducing expenditure on CPU/GPU to get an SSD.) (・_・ヾ

Yeah, I don't know what auxy is trying to say.

...but, but... You can re-invest those saved $$$ (from going with cheaper PSU) into more powerful CPU/GPU!? Instead of SSD...

Thanks everyone for the advice

I decided to swap the core-i3 with a core -i5 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819116781)
and change the gpu from a 660 to a 650ti(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130839)
up the ram to 8gb,
and change the psu to the corsair(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... %20cx430-m)

I don't think ill change the motherboard to a H77 cause he really doesn't need RAID and H77's are much more expensive. Ill also just stick with the HDD and forgo the SDD.

The new total comes to $704 dollars and for those who are asking he already has a copy of windows to use.

You're still getting him the TN LCD monitor instead of an IPS LCD? :(

If you can point me to a affordable IPS monitor then i may think about swapping it.

He already did. The Asus 23" VS239H-P for $175 after MIR is a great monitor. I love mine, got it for $165 with free shipping FYI. The 21.5" VS229H-P for $145 is it's little brother.

Even eIPS looks better than TN, but you'd have to own an IPS monitor to know what you're missing IMO. (It's the same scenario as SSDs, once you get one, all other computer seem slow and unresponsive) IPS will cost you a bit more obviously, so it may not fit in this build's budget. I don't trust Acer screens even though the one you chose has very good reviews, their laptops are notorious for having shoddy looking TN screens. Any of these 23" TN monitors cost almost the same, would be bigger, and serve just as well as that 21.5" that you picked out. Otherwise, if you're purchasing today (or able to wait for the sale to come back), the Asus 23" VH236H for $130 is on a great sale (today) and has almost a thousand of 5-star reviews.

As others have said, GPUs get replaced most often. Keep in mind though, if you spend an extra $10 on a 23" TN monitor, that puts you at $714 (dangerously close :o ). A 7850 2GB for $170 after MIR puts you only $10 over budget at that point, includes two free games (Bioshock and Tomb Raider), and would trounce the 650Ti handily.

[Edit: 2/19/2013] I see the 650Ti you chose is on sale for $125 after MIR now. That makes it a much more attractive buy than it was at $145.

I don't have time to read this whole thread but I'd be tempted to drop the graphics card budget and shoot for an i5 so that the whole platform (CPU/motherboard/RAM) lasts a little longer.

In my experience, people tend to upgrade graphics cards 2-3 times more frequently than processors; Take the Core2 for example:

  • When my Core2 E6400 was "new" in 2006 I already had a 6800GT, which was still pretty decent compared to the hot new 7800GTX of the day
  • I was still using Core2 when I swapped in an 8800GTS-320.
  • After two years the 8800GTS cooked itself (man, those G80's were hot), so the same Core2 6400 powered an 8800GTS-512 9800GTX GTS250* for a couple of years
  • At some point whilst I had the 8800GTS-512 I stumbled across a Q6600 which didn't really affect games all that much, I was using it for Virtual machines. It was basically just two E6400's in one socket
  • So yeah, I skipped the GT200 era and waited for Fermi to land before grabbing a GTX460.

I count that as four graphics cards during that Core2 platform, and realistically the original E6400 could have been there the whole time, from a gaming perspective.
Hell, I'm still using a late Core2 Quad in my HTPC to play modern, AAA games (admittedly with a 2GB HD7850 which is doing much of the heavy lifting).

A cheaper 7850 to enable a quad-core instead of a dual-core seems like the smarter long-term plan. I guess it depends whether your want to future-proof the build with upgradability or whether you just want the best build for 'right now, and to hell with the future!'
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

Amazon has the i5-3470 for $184!!! That's a no-brainer over the i5-3330. Cheaper and faster.

Also, i3's start to struggle while multitasking so stepping up to the i5 was a good choice.

Too bad you didn't read just a couple of posts above yours: OP has changed to an i5

But yes, your point that GPU gets upgrades while the CPU may even ride for the life of the machine is the exact point I made. On my current home computer (Phenom II X4 955) I've gone from HD 4850 to HD 5770 to HD 5870 then downgraded to HD 4350 since I don't game anymore. That's four graphics cards all on the same core system CPU, motherboard, and RAM. I'm pretty sure the current HD 4350 is going to ride into the sunset with the rest of the machine.

You could, but I think the parts he has picked out now are good enough and a good match, so the next weak link should be addressed, rather than unbalancing the system's performance further. ( ̄ω ̄;)
