FEAR game series

Tue Mar 05, 2013 9:53 pm

In my search for something new to play I came across the FEAR series of games. Looks interesting, kind of like Resident Evil crossed with a Tom Clancy game. Steam has a deal for all the FEAR games and expansions. Before I spent the money I figured I would ask if this series is worth while?

I like them. The first one has good voice acting, animation, and story. The Timegate games aren't essential but have moments - they're not canon though if that matters to you. They mostly expand upon the weapons and add approx. 1 enemy per episode. I haven't played 3 yet but 2 is good. The battlesuit/mech parts are pretty awesome.

The story sort of unravels over the games (because they had no idea how to finish the story) but the gameplay is pretty solid. If it's like 10-15 bucks, give or take, it's totally worth it.

I'm not seeing this sale on Steam though - there's one for ARMA at the moment.

I agree with JohnC's post. The first one is great and is genuinely scary. If you enjoyed it you might enjoy the others - or if you're looking for story in your game jump over to Deus Ex Human Revolution. If you liked battling the nightcrawlers in Perseus Mandate you might like Project Snowblind which is a fun but somewhat meat-headed version of the original Deus Ex thing.

The first one was pretty amazing (if you like survival-horror FPS) for its time. Spooky factor was some of the best to date (pre dead space) and the FPS mechanics were strong - even including a good implementation of bullet time (not like the crap in the recent Max Payne 3). AI was pretty decent as well.

However, the sequels (which I haven't played) were not so awesome. I think Fear 2 is supposedly OK - a solid FPS but lacking in originality that made the first one great, but Fear 3 I believe has been panned as pretty awful. Maybe someone here has played it?

I would definitely play the first one, the others were pretty "meh" so it's up to you...

I can get FEAR, Extraction Point, and the Perseus Mandate for $9.99 on Steam. Or they have all three of the games and three DLC's for $54.96. That's just a bundle price, not a sale. These games came out during a time when money was tight for me so I passed them up.

Might just pick up the first game for the price and see if I enjoy it before considering the other two.

The first one was good. Play in the dark if you haven't been spoiled already.

The "expansions" for the first one were terrible and FEAR2/3 discards them altogether. Haven't played 2/3 but heard that they were only mediocre.

9.99 for the first one and the "expansions" isn't that great a deal frankly but then I got the entire franchise on Steam during the holiday sale (despite owning the original, 2 (but not the dlc) and perseus mandate and extraction point already on disk.

It is a game you should play though. Also the Perseus Mandate Steam version doesn't have the forced install on the C drive bug that the disc version has.

If you're a multiplayer person check this: http://www.fearcombat.org/

FEAR 2005 is one of the best FPS/combat shooters ever made.
Extraction Pt has the same technical excellence as FEAR but not as good a gaming experience.

Persus Mandate+2/3 are low grade crap by nearly every criteria.

The original FEAR is one of my all time favorite PC games. I am in the minority by saying I also enjoyed the expansion games for FEAR. To me they just added a few new elements to the original game. I guess I was not expecting much since they were just expansions, but I still enjoyed them. I have probably replayed the original FEAR game six or seven times, and I rarely replay games. I think the graphics still look good years later, and I can turn the settings up high on current hardware, unlike when the game came out I had to sacrifice visuals to get the game to run smooth.

As for FEAR 2 and FEAR 3. I don't regret buying them when they were on sale, but I am glad I didn't pay much for them. I replayed FEAR 2 once just to test out a new PC, but other than that I probably would not waste any more time on either. I will say, to me, FEAR 3 at least had a little more of the original games "creepy" feel to it than FEAR 2 did.

FEAR 1 was great. Good story and pretty scary. I played the expansion (extraction Point) and I enjoyed it. I don't think I played Perseus Mandate or not.

FEAR 2 left me "meh". The story was really reaching and felt forced. The game was all right, but if you didn't play it, there'd be no big loss.

FEAR 3 I didn't bother with. It looked silly and the game looked like the game designers had a bunch of 12 year old console kiddies in mind.

I'd just FEAR and XP. Forget the rest.

Agree 100%. I would play FEAR 1 late at night in the dark and it scared the crap out of me. 2 seemed like a joke and I passed up 3 altogether after that.

However, I would say that FEAR's beauty really lies in its unique mechanics. The guns feel absolutely great, mastering the G2A2 in multiplayer is nothing short of an art, and the holstering / unarmed features really set a great pace and flow that sets it apart from all modern shooters to this day.

Do note that if you're interested in trying the multiplayer, the steam version doesn't work because WB pulled the plug on the free keygen and GameSpy met its untimely demise around the end of last year.

However, there is a community-run master server and a free download of a working patched community version of the game at www.fear-community.org. The site is run by some nice guys who are quite helpful. It's a great game if you're looking for something different than your cookie-cutter FPS.
