Best Video Game soundtrack.

Thu Mar 07, 2013 7:51 am

So what's yours?

My top two of all time has to be Quake Trent Reznor made that game even much more than it already was. And Mass Effect, The main theme brought that game universe to life.

Tough one. Without making categories, these come to mind:

DOOM I & II
Super Mario Bros. I, II, III, and Super Mario World
Warcraft II
After Burner I & II
Legend of Zelda I & Link to the Past
Shatterhand
Magic of Scheherazade
Mega Man I, II, III, IV
Sheep Rustlers in the sky! <S> Slapt | <S> FUI | Air Warrior II/III

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I'm not saying that it's the best soundtrack of all time, but it's definitely my favorite in recent memory.

Michael McCann - "Icarus - Main Theme"

I don't have "the best", but the 3 games with most memorable and "melodic" (to me) music were an original Unreal Tournament, original Deus Ex and EVE Online.

I'll second that; Mass Effect had some very beautiful music.

Tough one, there have been a lot of good ones.

I think one way to narrow the choices down is which soundtrack do you listen to OUTSIDE of the game. I have Command and Conquer Red Alert 1 and 2 and Plants vs Zombies that I actively listen to in my car and at work.

So based on that criteria, I'd have to say:
CnC RA 1 & 2
Plants vs Zombies
No matter how bad the new homepage sucks or how bungled the new management is...

To all the original writers/contributors and volunteers, please know that I have nothing but the deepest love for you and the work you've done.

Shadow of the Colossus. All the storytelling in the game was done through the instrumental soundtrack.

There are many GREAT songs from games like Portal, but soundtracks for the entire game? I'm a huge SNES fanboy. Great childhood memories.

Super Mario RPG
Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest

I have to second Command & Conquer: Red Alert. The Hell March still gives me thrills. Mass Effect, Bioshock and Skyrim are all good.
For music in games, but not the actual score for the game... it's a toss up between Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Saints Row 2.

If you guys are interested, Minnesota Public Radio has a podcast called Top Score that is all about video game scores. It's heavy on the full orchestra type stuff, but it's a great way to get exposed to the music.

DOOM I+II
Quake (Reznor)
Diablo 1+2 probably the best

the soundtracks out lately are just a lot of noise and dont add to the ambiance of the game, but rather just sound like a music track.

No! Oh, no! People have different tastes than me! (;≧皿≦)
Stop liking what I don't like! {{|└(>o< )┘|}}
NOTE: The above is purely parody and not serious at all.
Well, actually, I used to really be that way, but it's amazing what adulthood does for you, huh? (⌒▽⌒)☆
Some of my favorite game soundtracks, avoiding ones that have already been posted:
  • Entire Touhou (東方) series -- ZUN is amazing! (☆^O^☆)
  • Okami -- I still burst into tears immediately every time I hear 「Reset」"Thank You version".
  • Final Fantasy XI -- the music itself is good, but for me, it has so many memories attached!
  • Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry series (especially DMC3 OMG)O(≧∇≦)O
  • Streets of Rage series, any game by WOLFTEAM (16-bit SEGA -- I love that YM2612 FM Synthesis!)
  • Quake III Arena -- much of the soundtrack was by Front Line Assembly
  • Einhander (PS1)
  • Hotline Miami -- the OST is a big part of why this 2012 indie game is so amazing
  • The Binding of Isaac OST; simultaneously atmospheric and listenable on its own somehow
  • Bionic Commando: Rearmed has a pounding techno soundtrack that is a love letter to the original game
  • Castlevania series -- but especially Castlevania II - Simon's Quest
What a list, huh? I could probly come up with some more, too. I guess since the thread was technically about "the best", I'd have to pick one...

(o;TωT)o Aaah, there's no way! I can't!

You should try out some of the indie games! It's true that a lot of your big AAA games go for music, usually either licensed in an attempt to sound current (boring), or orchestral in an attempt to be epic (even worse), but a lot of your current indie games understand that appropriate music can make or break a game. Specifically, try out Hotline Miami. It's just a few dollars on Steam, and it's so amazing!

For music written specifically for a game, I like the Guild Wars franchise.

Madden 2003 had a good selection of then-popular songs, but they weren't written for the game.

Yeah. That's a great soundtrack.

I wonder if they will use it in the movie?

As far as single songs from video games go, I still have a soft spot for Liberi Fatali from Final Fantasy VIII. Perhaps not the "coolest", but it really is quite the orchestral composition and can go toe to toe with just about anything from the likes of John Williams or Howard Shore and crowd.

Oh my god! That reminds me of an old DOS game that I had on my K6 system called "Terminal Velocity" -- some of the music in that game was incredible!

I remember playing this when I was like 9 years old, hehe; it was old even then.

Wow. I humbly bow to SonicSilicon - I had forgotten Jill of the Jungle. Doom I moves to the number 2 slot. You are correct!

I have trouble liking that game's music because the cutscene music is trying so hard to be Tron: Legacy's soundtrack it makes me feel sorry for the guy who did the soundtrack. Seriously, I really do.

I just finished the game. But I would say aside from ME3 I would recommend people check out DMC: Devil May Cry (the new one).
