30 in or larger 1080P IPS Monitors?

Thu Mar 07, 2013 11:02 pm

I don't want to spend $400 on a 27 ips 25 x 14 monitor nor do I want to spend almost double to go from a 22 to a 27 @ 1080p but I would spend around $250 to $300 for an IPS that was 30in or more even if it was just 1080p.... Is there such a thing?...If so pls send a link or two.... I can't seem to find anything larger than 27in IPS's

I just bt a 22 in IPS HP monitor at Best BUY after combing newegg, ebay and amazon.... for only $129.99 and it is great but too small....1080p of course... Why do I have to spend double just to add 4 or 5 inches of real estate at the same resolution... COMMENTS links etc please. All of the 27 in IPS Displays seem to be $270 and up. Not worth it in my opinion....I'd rather put that money into something else instead of 5 inches of glass...

If I can find something in 15 days or less i will return to best buy for a full refund (fyi best buy and walmart cut their return policy to a 15 day).

OH and if there is a very high quality LCD/LED with a lot of real estate for that price please feel free to suggest.

Phenom II x4 black @ 4ghz 8 gigs gtx 660 7 pro etc etc

wouldn't a 1080p hdtv be about your only choice in that price range? like a 32" or so with ips type panel.
for most purposes it works, just not quite the same picture clarity as a computer monitor could provide.
it's nice say going from my 16:10 22" tn 1680x1050 to a vizio 32" ips 1080p(was like $300ish when bought around a year ago) every once in a while, mostly for videos :)
everything generally looks nice, and the screen is huge sitting a few feet from it.
probably drinking some tea.

Because trigonometry and engineering economics, that's why.

Assuming a 16:10 resolution, the relationship between the diagnol measurement (which you are quoting) and the lengths of the two sides is:
a^2 + (1.6 * a)^2 = b^2
...where "b" is the diagnol and "a" is the screen height.

Run the math, and the area of the 22" screen is about 217.5 in^2, while the area of the 27" screen is 327.2 in^2...a ratio of 1.5. What this means is that when the LCD manufacturer produces a giant sheet of LCD glass at their foundry, and has to decide what type of screens to print on it, they can get roughly 1.5x as many 22" screens from it as compared to 27" screens, even though both take (roughly) the same amount of manufacturing resources. Then there's the need for the OE assembler to have a backlight spreader with 1.5x as much material area, and provide about 1.5x as much illumination. In other words, the final cost is governed by an exponential relationship, not a linear one, and complicated further by the fact that demand for 22" IPS screens is much higher than the demand for more expensive 27" screens. So 22" screens are plentiful and cheap, while 27" screens are much more expensive.

Or, tl;dr version: you can get a 27" Auria-branded IPS for $400 at Microcenter, or you can spend $300 and get one of the no-name, no-scaler models off eBay. Or, you can stick with 22" monitors and go to a multi-monitor setup. But you can't get nice things for free, because if you could, I would already have them :P

Thanks for the HDTV suggestions... I have been gaming on a 42 in LG 1080p LCD (about 3 yrs old) but am seeking a better more vivid experience.... What do you guys think of this Panasonic on Amzon used for only $350? It is an IPS but with only 60hz ... BUT it is cheap... I don not care about 3-D or Smart Tv stuff (though this has smart capabiliies) I will use it primarly as a monitor for gaming Ex Far Cry 3 cryis 3 etc.. These games look a lot better on the Lil 22 in HP IPS monitor I just bought.. What should I expect the pic quality to be like on this 42 in IPS Panasonic...??

"Because trigonometry and engineering economics, that's why."

Because of volume.

If manufacturing production switched to 30" pannel vs 24", from that alone you would see 30" panel drop by 50%.

The issue is that the industry does not believe people would spend 400$ for a 30" monitor, so we are still seeing $1300 today as we did 8 years ago.

Ths PC industry also dont believe people would pay more for higher res display, thats why we have 130$ 1920x1080 monitors the norm.

Its to bad this PC mentality controls the evolution. Many company (specially nvidia & AMD) would get a boost if people switch from 1080 to large format 4K monitors...
But untill someone decide "Maybe people are interested in 30" monitors" we will be faced with paying $1300 and the whole market will stagnate.

At this rate we will be able to by 24" 1080p monitor for 90$ before 30" model break the 1000$ barrier.

None of this is trigonometry or engineering, its all in the hand of monitor makers to decide what they will build in volume.

So after essentially re-phrasing my own trigonometrically-derived screen area ratio and points about engineering economics, you conclude the current state of the manufacturing market has nothing to do with trigonometry or engineering? That's an interesting reading :P

A few year ago (2008), I was faced with going with either a 1080p LCD TV, or an LCD computer monitor. I ended up going with a 37" Panasonic 1080p "Super IPS". BTW, The IPS panels on the Panasonics back then were pretty good (not sure if they are comparable to the newer ones). Long story short, while great for games at first, and obviously watching HD video, a 37" TV was not the best for computer tasks sitting only 3 to 4 feet away. Shortly thereafter, I picked up a 24 inch monitor to replace it (since been upgraded to a Dell 30"). If you are going to be using this at a desk, or anywhere it will be less than 5 feet away and are going to be doing other things on it besides gaming and movies, the 42" will be way too big. With 1080p at a desk, you are pushing it even at 32 inches.

There's no such thing called 'Super IPS'. It's actually called 'IPS Alpha' or in proper terms, 'H-IPS'. What's arguably the best 'affordable' type of IPS that offers the WIDEST and the MOST viewing angles.

That said, I wouldn't suggest a TV unless you're looking to tweak the **** out of it. I own a Pana Viera 32' H-IPS and it has many issues.

It ghosts, input lags and the backlightning system makes up as it goes along. As in, increases and decreases the backlight on it's own to it's own liking.

You're much better off getting a monitor and pulling it next to you.

Also, 60 HZ or 120 HZ doesn't mean jack **** when you're connecting the TV to the computer as most TV's (unless they're 3D TV''s) DO NOT refresh at 60 HZ. They 'interpolate' 60 HZ into 120, and ONLY when you're watching TV. Only 3D TV's do 120 HZ, and those are **** expensive.

It's not the PC mentality, it's the TV mentality. Both camps' marketing has convinced everyone that a quality display is defined as 1080p FULL HIGH DEF OMG LOL LOL WTF!!1!one and nobody second-guesses it.

As for the price, I don't feel like getting into a technical discussion right now but the short version is that the display size starts getting very large the yield (percentage of panels that make the cut) drops like a rock so not only is a lot more area, a lot more panels are being thrown out instead of sold and the ones that do sell have to subsidize that. It's less of an issue with TVs since dead pixels are a lot less noticeable.

Oh, and as for the 27 inch Korean wonders...it's because a) the panels are the major manufacturer's sloppy seconds and b) they're coming straight from no-name factories overseas without all the marketing and distribution channels and whatnot you get with Dell, Asus, etc.

How much of a difference will there be between that Panasonic 42 in IPS and 3 yr old 42 in LG LCD? (I guess it's a TN).

I'll take the Panasonic any day (the only brands that come close IMO are Sony and Sharp, but they should cost more than the Panasonic, especially the Sony's).
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.
