M5A78L-M LX PLUS - no onboard video

Tue Mar 12, 2013 2:18 pm

Per the topic, I built a *new* system using this motherboard and the following:

phenom II x6 1045T
8gb (4x2) kingston 1333 ram
random hdd to test with

edit: BIOS is the most current version released.

I put everything together, plugged in the vga cable, powered it up and nothing displayed. I reset everything bios/etc and still nothing. Afterwards I pulled an old video card out and plugged it in. The system posts normally with the discrete card installed. I rebooted at this point and got into the BIOS and set the integrated/onboard card to display first, saved the changes and powered it down. I removed the discrete card and turned it back on and still no video being displayed. For the time being I put a ticket in with ASUS but I figured I'd ask here too.

Any thoughts on what else to try?

From your description it sounds like the onboard is dead.

It may be worth trying a BIOS update if you're not running the latest.

Given that the onboard is only an HD 3000 maybe you're better off using it with a discrete card anyhow?
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

kinda what I figured but oh well.

This is going to be a NASbox eventually and the 16x pci-e slot is going to be occupied with a HBA (IBM m1015) so the onboard is pretty much a requirement.

If a BIOS update doesn't help it's RMA time then.

One other final thought - If you've got an old PCI graphics card you could use that (assuming you don't have other plans for the PCI slot). This would also have the advantage of not stealing RAM bandwidth for the IGP. (Not that file serving is particularly demanding, so that's a very minor consideration.)

well that didn't take long... Less than 2 hours after sending in a tech request ticket they already issued an RMA number with shipping details to my house.

Hopefully the replacement part works properly when I get it back.
