TR BBQ ~X~ Official Thread

Postposted on Tue Jan 22, 2013 9:42 am

Livestream was here.

TR BBQ swap thread is here!

Official date is August 17th!

Its time! :D

The date for this year is likely to be August, 10th, 17th, or 24th. Will know for sure by the first week of March. For the uninitiated the TR BBQ is an annual tradition hosted in Holland, MI right on the big lake. Any and all TR readers are invited, just introduce yourself in the thread. :)

Obviously I have some other priorities this year but things on that front are going well so I'm going to proceed as normal with plans for the BBQ. I really liked the addition of the "pre-party", "after dark" and "walk of shame" last year so I would plan on that for the general scope of the event if you want to make an entire weekend out of it. I know last year is going to be hard to top but we're talking the BIG TEN YEAR EVENT so if we can find any stops we missed last time we'll pull them out this year for sure! :o This is the one all of you who keep saying you'll come some year have been waiting for...

Ribs, baked beans, burgers, hot-dogs, cool dog, flamethrower, potato cannon, giant raft, fireworks, Cornhole, trophies, Livestream, bonfire, smores, hardware swap, massive beach, friendly geeks, approachable celebrities, prizes and swag... Phew!
Image
...and that was just last year...

<TR BBQ ~X~ Weekend Event Official Timeline>
Friday Evening 8/16 - Hanging With The Fishes
For anyone so inclined we are inviting those who are coming to town the night before to join us at our house and hang out and get a pizza or whatever, maybe play some games on our rarely seen in the wild Wii U or maybe we just sit around in our comfy seating and talk. We'll say people are welcome to arrive 7:00 or later and I'm putting a cap on the night preemptively at 11:00 so I can see off those staying at the cottage and still get some decent sleep myself. This'll be a BYOB event BTW but I'll have some sodas to go with the pizza. Of course any night-owls are welcome to continue the pre-party at any of Zeeland's fine local establishments (ha! like any of them are open past 10 :P).

Saturday 8/17 - The Main Event!
This one is pretty self explanatory. Plan on arriving between 11:00 and 1:00 - food should be ready around 2:00. After the feast we start the tourney and the swap and then before you know know it the time is already ~8:00 and it's time to eat again and start thinking about fireworks...

Saturday Evening 8/17 - Tech Report After Dark
It was awesome to have so many more people stay late last year - so we're doing it again! After some food cooked down on the beach we wait for the sun to set and then we UNLEASH HELL! We've got ~$500 worth of fireworks to gawk at this year thanks to the efforts of SHOES, Sheldomaus and numerous other donations. When the show's over everyone can stay as late as they want and relax by lake fireside.

Sunday Morning 8/18 - The Walk of Shame
BTW, I'm open to a better name for this one. Anyone that didn't leave town Saturday night is welcome to join our group of regulars to help clean up anything that got missed the night before and also for a hearty breakfast (I'll buy the supplies on my way there). There is absolutely no pressure to come back and help, there will be a sizable crew onsite, but if you feel like stopping by before you head out please feel welcome.

Looking like August 17th or 24th are our choices. I'm leaning toward the 17th because the 24th is just too close to schools and whatever starting up again. Thoughts?

Also, any suggestions for anything new and different? Or do we have the formula perfected and just want more of the same? :D No hurt feelings if anyone has suggestions...

Lastly, I mentioned above that this year is the year everyone who never makes it said they would come, can we get a general idea of how many people this is really going to be true for? If attendance is going to double or something I would like to know sooner rather than later. :o

Edit: I guess the 10th is still an option too but I think I still like the 17th the best.

Once again I will be in the US (Independence, MO) this summer but only until the 8th of August! Bah! I WILL one day attend the fabled BBQ. That would be a record of a 3680 mile great circle distance from my home to MI. :D

Damage/anyone else - how about another pre-BBQ meetup in Independence/Lee's Summit area some time in the first week of August?

August 17 is Independence Day! Will there be Indonesian flags and fireworks?

I found something that would be a great addition to the BBQ this year.

The bubble solution seems pretty easy to make. The giant wand hoop not so much, but I'm sure i could figure something out.
Overall I look forward to seeing you guys again.

I think we can handle procuring a couple old fishing poles and some twine for the wand/hoop. That is super cool! We need to geek it up even more though, maybe with dry ice or helium... Hmm...

OK, I'll let you figure out how to get the heavy machinery down to the beach.

I guess I need to answer a very important question.

Yes I will be there to cook!!

Actually I kept the whole month of August open just because, but any date that was listed would work.

17th is perfect and I hope to be out early on Friday.

OH and one other thing. Someone else gets the Wasson Cup this year. You cannot keep giving it to the cook.
