The app count does matter, however.

No, it does not. I have contacted several app developers for my favorite apps which I have used on iOS and asked them if they have plans to develop WP8 versions (or update their very old WP7 apps). Most have told me they have no plans to do so due to smaller (basically meaning "insignificant") user base. Nobody mentioned "number of apps" - developers are smart to not care about useless numbers like this.

I have WP7 and absolutely love it. When I first got it 1.5 years ago, I went out and downloaded a whole bunch of years. Over the years, I've slowly started deleting all the tablet apps I never use...which is most of them.
When I'm talking with an Apple guy and he says something along the lines of "iphone is better because it has a bazillion apps", I just respond with "more like a bazillion - 1 fart apps".
I agree with other posters have said. Microsoft needs to put out high quality apps and forget quantity. Quality over quantity. Ever time.
