Display driver has stopped working -- Help pls!!

Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:06 pm

Hi guys.. i just recently bought a sapphire HD 7770.. Last monday.. It runs good till earlier this afternoon. But this evening, while playing HoN (Heroes of Newearth) it suddenly freezed, and when i alt tabbed, there is a pop up saying "Display driver has stopped working... blablabla.." I'm wondering if this is hardware problem? Because my last video card was giving this kind of symptom before fully blown out.. or totally died.. PLease help me guys...

Also, i want to clarify.. How do i check my video card driver? When i checked the catalyst version of my catalyst software, it says 12.10.. is this version a bit outdated? about how many months? Also when i check the device manager of my pc in display adapters, it says 9.2.0.0.. So which is true?

Also, from last monday when i installed my video card, all went fine.. Until yesterday, i removed again my video card since i re-managed my cables in the case, and then i installed again my card and when i turned on, theres a popup saying installing driver.. Im pretty sure the popup talks about the video card. IS there a need for me to reinstall the driver so that i could get a clean installation again? Please help me.. i dont want to go to the points that id get blue screen of death like the symptom of my old video card.. Thanks..

System specs:

Intel core i3
ENermax NAXN 650 watts
4GB ram (1 stick only)
asus P8H61-M LE
Sapphire HD 7770

I'd start with an uninstall of the current driver, download of the latest driver, and reinstall it. See how it works then.

Uninstall drivers completely, then go to here:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Download latest non-beta and try it again.
Also, open up your case again and make sure the card is seated securely in its slot.

You may have issues with the motherboard's PCIe slot (or other components on it) or perhaps with power supply, but you should start with simple things first.

Thanks for your help guys.. I just recently downloaded the new driver 13.1 ctalyst WHQL.. Right now, i dont experience any problems as of the moment..

also guys, i want to ask is owning a newer monitor like those LED ones would have a change in the graphical looks of the games? Because right now, i've been using CRT monitor, and i wonder if there would have significant improvement on the graphics of my games such as skyrim or BF3.. Thanks..

The most noticeable difference would be the change in resolution and aspect ratio. You would want a 1920x1080, 1920x1200 or 2560x1440 resolution with DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort input if you bought a new IPS LCD monitor (like the Asus VS239H-P or Auria EQ276W or similar e-IPS LCD monitors available in the Philippines).

An LCD monitor would have sharper individual pixels than a CRT monitor. As CRTs age, they may tend to get blurrier, too. LCDs have no flicker, while CRTs running at less than 70 Hz refresh may have headache-inducing flicker. On the down side, LCDs may not change states as quickly as a CRT, so you may see some ghostly trails for fast-moving images that you wouldn't see with most CRTs with medium-short persistence phosphors.

Are you running your existing CRT at 1280x960 or 1152x864 or are you still using it at an incredibly low 1024x768 resolution? If you haven't tried the higher resolutions yet, please give those a shot. Because you are running at very low resolution, your graphics card has extra processing power available to turn up anti-aliasing in games to 4X (or even higher). This will slightly compensate for the low resolution.

Hi ! Thank you for your reply.. Yeah, i think i want to try newer monitors.. I want something more to my graphics..

I want to ask, how many inches is 1280x960? or which resolution is not too small and good for gaming but not too big? and which is better? LED, or LCD? i find LCD monitors more cheaper.. i wonder whats their difference? Aside from pressing the LCD you see a watery color effect.. :D

Also, im still using a CRT monitor with 1024x768.. Pretty old school eh? Im comfortable with the monitor size, but i want more of my graphics. Games like BF3 textures in my monitor seems to blurry.. and too smooth, making it very cartoon and i think im missing the realistic visual effects of the game. Im thinking my monitor is the culprit.. this monitor is 5-6 years of age also.

Have you tried 1152x864 or 1280x960 on your existing monitor?

Most analog CRT monitors can operate at several different frequencies. Unless your monitor was built before 1990, it is very possible that it supports a higher resolution than 1024x768. If you can't figure out how to use the display properties yourself to try a higher resolution like XGA+ (1152x864), can you at least give us the brand and model number of your monitor?

I'd restart the computer/driver and move on until it happened again which might take days, hours or minutes depending.

my GTX 460 had the same thing happen 10X's + over the 2 years I had it, while an inconvenience the issue rarely repeated itself and when it did was resolved by an updated driver or a rollback.

if the issue repeats I'd go through the FAQ on the games website to see if their is an issue..... if their was a mentioned issue relating directly to your exact video card in question I'd apply the fix recommended in the FAQ, I'd also then see if AMD has acknowledged the issue and issued a beta fix, if they haven't and their is no specific mention I'd e-mail them to address the issue in case it hasn't been done already.

if you suspect hardware may be the issue look at your power supply first.... is it a quality unit, is it 450 watts or more, lost drivers at least for me if consistent have usually been power related if unfixable in software.

either way a video driver suddenly not responding is a part of the PC experience... infrequent but when it does happen.... meh.

good luck, don't panic, your computer most likely isn't broken.

Yeah, thanks for the input.. After i updated my driver to the lates 13.1, the error didnt show up again at all.. Thanks mate.. im still monitoring my system..

No, i havn't tried because the monitor won't allow me.. If i change it to higher than 1024x768 in games, the screen isn't fitted and you would see that the monitor really can't support it.. The brand of my monitor is SAMSUNG.. I don't know the exact model, i forgot.. hehhehehe
