Mr Legohead

Sun Mar 31, 2013 1:18 am

Hi guys, long time reader and very occasional poster but I just wanted to put up a link to my latest project.

Its a Lego sorting head (found in most department store toy sections) that I've been modding into a small gaming PC for my sister.

I've posted the build-log on Overclockers Australia (OCAU) so please have a look if you're interested and leave some comments/feedback

Cheers

Awesome...keep updating here on occasion since I don't read that forum otherwise.

Also, is it just me or does that Lego face look a little evil? :P I think it's the eyebrow shape that does it...if you agree, maybe go with that theme and put red activity LEDs in the eyes :D

Ha! it may be the angle but its still better than the ones with the tongue sticking out or the weird lips and eyelashes.

I'll post a few pics here as I go then.

I see it's been updated with the completed build. Looks great! The only thing I'd add, because I'm a filter junkie and hate dust in my PCs, is a filter to the bottom intake fan. Maybe even more important in a tight custom build like this that isn't easy to take apart.

Nice! I didn't realize those cards were so stubby, I think I could use that for a build of my own that has some tight tolerances.

yeah Madman I totally agree.

However, I couldn't find a decent filter in Australia at the time and I figured it's an easy add-on later and not crucial to the build.

I'll post a few pics here in a second.

In case you don't want to head over to the OCAU forums here's a quick few pictures (more available in the OCAU thread)

As you can see, the final completed build looks almost untouched from the original (creepily so, it's even in the same position on the table :S) which was the intention. I wanted to build a computer that wasn't recognisable as one; no flashy lights, no obvious cabling etc.

and here's another shot just for fun!

Really chuffed about the positive responses on OCAU! Hopefully you guys around the rest of the world like it too!

Oh, one other thing to consider...EMI shielding. It's normally provided by the metal case but this one is plastic and wood so not much shielding. I doubt you want to take it apart again but you could cover the inside with something to shield it. I don't know if aluminum foil would do anything but it would be easy to form in there on the curves.

That is a good point. I had considered EMI shielding but read quite a few forums saying you shouldn't worry too much unless you have problems. Plexiglass cases seem to have little trouble but it also seems to vary in different situations.

I'm still in the 'see what issues come up' stage with this case as it is the first one I've made and I didn't think I could predict what might come up.

One of the things I put into my design was to make sure I could easily take it apart again. The separate tiers of the lego sorter really helped in that regard.

I'll do a bit more searching on EMI and aluminium foil in case it comes up.

Very well done!! I'll second the fan filter notion.
