Welcome to TR!

First off, what is your budget? I see your current configuration comes in around $750, but we don't want to make suggestions that would push the total cost outside what you can spend.

Secondly, what kind of visuals are you pushing for? Mid detail at 1080p? High? Max?

Finally, take a look at the most recent TR system guide. This is a good place to judge where the best value points are given a specific budget.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

I'm not sure why you would stick with AMD for CPU since you are getting a motherboard. I priced Core i3 and it's equivalent in price.

But if you stuck with AMD I wouldn't blame you. It's a pretty tough choice. I guess the question is how great are your power consumption concerns. You'll get more heat out of the AMD and it may consequently make the fans spin higher and louder. But the AMD is more feature rich and sometimes beats a low end i5.

Other than that I'd watch those tall heat spreaders on the memory because they can interfere with CPU coolers. Note also that I suspect that's not the best Sapphire card at that price. For all we know prices changed since you last looked. Power supply is fine for AMD but you could go to 500W with a core i3 although that won't save you money directly.

What resolution is your monitor? Lower than 1080p won't require a 7870.

Newegg's doing a promo for their Line-M mATX case right now; comes in at $35 shipped.

i3 3220 - $121
ASRock H77M - $70
Corsair CX500 - $58
Kingston 2x4 GB 1600 RAM - $61
Lite-On DVD-RW - $18

That's $363, leaving you $387 for storage and graphics. If you get a 7850 2GB instead of a 7870 (e.g. this Vistiontek variety w/a lifetime warranty, $200), you'll be able to get yourself a 250 GB SSD of some variety (e.g. Samsung 840 Series 250 GB, $169), which I prefer to spinning disks even if it means I have to be frugal with game installs. ymmv there, though.

You can probably do that stuff cheaper if you're a deal-hound like JAE, but everything I linked comes to $732 shipped.

Would this intel build be better?

That's better than your original build, yes, but you only have $160 left for a GPU. The GPU makes more of a difference in games; spend less on the CPU (get an i3 3220 or i5 3470 instead) and spend the difference on the GPU.

You don't need a 600 watt power supply...

Now you have a 650 W PSU in there; you don't need it. Corsair's Builder series 500 W units will be fine:

this one if you don't mind fixed cables, $58
this one if you'd like modular cables, $67

I wouldn't bother with mail-in rebates, personally.

Yeah, the rest is fine if you can afford it. You can get the i5 3470 for $35 less; you won't notice any difference if you just play games and watch videos and suchlike. You can save some with a cheaper H77 or Z75-based motherboard, too.

And, again, the PSU is overkill; either of the two Corsair 500 W units Iisted would be every bit as effective as the 650 W unit you've got in that list (which doesn't have modular cables). If for some reason you must spend $76 on a PSU, you can get a more robustly-built Gold-rated unit which'd be a better use of the money.

7870 will be fine....but why no SSD, you'll hampered by slow HDD.

Just an FYI, if you stay with a Z77 or Z75 motherboard, you will be able to overclock an i5-3470 (on sale for $185) by 400MHz. That brings it up to a 4GHz max clock which is good.

The base clock of that chip is 3.2Ghz; 4Ghz is an 800Mhz overclock. The chip isn't designed to run 3.6Ghz on all cores; saying "a 400Mhz OC gets you to 4Ghz" is disingenuous at best and doesn't set expectations realistically.

An 800Mhz OC on Ivy Bridge without delidding the chip is going to require some decent cooling.

I guess I should have used "max turbo clock" instead of just saying "max clock." My apologies. (stock single-thread max turbo is 3.6GHz + 400MHz = 4GHz, read about multicore enhancement for a monkey wrench) Considering the stock turbo clock is already 400MHz higher than base clock, sure, I guess you could say I'm claiming an 800MHz clock increase, but that's stretching the truth. Assuming you have adequate cooling, anything that stresses the processor to any degree is going to activate "turbo core" so the increase in clock speeds while doing meaningful work is still 400MHz.
