AMD Drivers Keeps Crashing Under Windows -8

Fri Mar 15, 2013 2:59 am

Hi,

Ever since I installed Windows -8 Pro ( 64 bit ) on my Multi Monitor system, all my screens go black with following error message.

" AMD Drivers stopped Responding & has Recovered "

It happens so many times an hour that I had to stop using Windows -8 completely.
Even the worst thing is that if I have more than one hard drive & driver crashes, then on next reboot my system automatically starts disk checking which takes hours for a 3.0 GB slave HDD.
I never had this problem with Windows -7 using the same system.

My system configuration is as follows.

Dell T-7500 Workstation.

Intel Xeon E5645 2.4 GHz
12 GB DDR3 RAM
AMD Fire Pro 2460 Video Cards ( 3 of them. Each supports 4 Monitors )
12 Dell 24 inch ( 1920x1200) Monitors

I downloaded AMD Drivers for workstation & FirePro 2460 Video card from following AMD Links.

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/f ... n8-64.aspx

AMD has not updated Drivers since December 2012.

I will appreciate any & all help.

Well, um, not much we can do to help unless AMD updates their drivers. ┐(‘~`;)┌ You could post on Beyond3D; I think some of the AMD driver guys hang out there.

B3D? I believe http://www.rage3d.com/board/ is more of an "official unofficial support forums" for ATI/AMD cards

You've got a pretty unusual configuration. Not a huge surprise that Win8 support for a 12-monitor setup isn't quite fully baked yet.

Would posting on the AMD forums be worthwhile? I'd think your best bet would be to post somewhere where you could get an actual AMD person to respond.

Many Thanks to you all & I am really sorry to reply so late due to unforeseen circumstances.

I searched everywhere to find a place to post the question directly to AMD but they didn't make it easy to find. They just keep you going in circle without a proper place to post.

Windows 8 is supposed to make multi-monitor support better than Win -7.

As I mentioned before this configuration works flawlessly with Win-7 & not a single crash in last 6 months.

I want to move on to Win -8, simply because MS would force me to do so sooner or later & I learned that from Win Vista which was a crap.

Microsoft has stated that Windows 7 will be supported until 2020, and Windows 7 seems to be a pretty solid OS. What's the big hurry to move to Windows 8?

And you just proved them wrong. Or AMD did. I'd try to get on a bug list and wait to move into Windows 8.

Good news, thanks.

I guess it feels good that you are keeping up with new technology & sometimes new features help too. But in this case it's probably not worth it if the problem is not resolved.

I did try but darn it, how did I miss it ?

But really appreciate the effort you put in to get to the exact place.

I did post there, let's see what they have to say.

Uninstall Hydrovision

Making the text big just so it doesn't get missed. I was having lots of issues with FirePro cards on Windows 8. Uninstalling Hydrovision (just the Hydrovision component - not the whole driver) fixed the issue.

It's not Windows 8 that's the problem. It's AMD's Hydrovision.

Hope this works for you.

Control Panel > Programs and Features

In the list pick "AMD Catalyst Install Manager" and up top pick "Change".

In the dialog that pops up pick "Uninstall Manager". Then pick "Custom". Then check the box next to "Hydravision". Then click "Next".

That should about do it.

Thank you so much.

I am working on a project & will have to change the HDD that has Win - 8.

I will do it later & let you know.

Very kind of you.

Hi,

I tried that & initially it looked fine & I was excited but few minutes later it came crashing down.

Any other suggestions ?

Did it crash in exactly the same way - did you get the same error message about "AMD drivers stopped responding"?

Almost same. Not all monitors go black though. Sometimes few but rarely all, now & before same.

Error message is same in all instances. You get two error messages.

First Message : " Display driver stopped Responding "

Immediately after that Second message : " AMD display drivers stopped Responding & has Recovered "

Both displayed one after another in system tray corner.

Recovery is automatic & takes few seconds.

There were two instances when it crashed which I noticed this time because I was excited & was looking for clues if something was different & that was this time dragging of window from one monitor to another monitor. So it crashed twice while I did that but I never paid attention to that before & there was the usual crash too as it did before.

Well, I'm all out of suggestions. You're the first person I've run into that is running that kind of config (Running 12 monitors on 3 FirePros). Try to get in touch with AMD support either over the phone or on forums or chat.

go back to Win7..... just do it.

to say your hardware config is unique is an understatement and your config worked gloriously in Win7 so why keep beating your head against the wall with Win8 when 7 is going to be supported for another 7 years?... is their something wonderful in Win8 aside from marketing claims that is making it compelling for you?

I'd love to know because I've got a copy of Win8 doing nothing on the shelf beside me and I'm still trying to find a reason to do the changeover on the system it was meant for.

Just for ego I guess & MS has a way to force you to switch sooner or later & I'd rather do it sonner while I am sane. :D

But it looks like it is making me insane instead right now.

Have you tried dialing back your configuration to just one video card + 4 monitors and seeing how that goes? Then try going to 2 cards + 8 monitors if you don't get the error and test again. Then (assuming the bug doesn't manifest early) go to 3 video cards + 1 monitor, 2 monitors, etc. until you start seeing the bug manifest. This can help you in figuring out where you are hitting the blocker for filing bug reports.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly are you using these 12 displays for?

aside from the empty MS claim of "improved support" is their anything in Win8 that you prefer over Win7?

at the moment your reasoning seems to be limited to a desire to have the newest no matter how often history has proven that early adopters universally get screwed.

I can believe that MS put in some improvements for using two or three monitors... however I doubt they or AMD spent huge resources doing vigorous tests of a dozen 1080p monitors being driven by multiple GPUs in a single system...

Let me see if I can answer most of your questions & by most I mean it is going to be impossible to explain unless you are in Financial markets & then into technical of them & then into watching one market in multiple time frames which I think is, less than one tenth of one percent people do in my profession.

In simpler term a brain surgeon dealing with only one function of all that a human brain does.

Why do this ?

Because rewards are like a next Facebook x 10 OR Google x 100 if you succeed in coming up with an algorithm that some nerd can put it in the code.

I am not saying that I have it OR I will have it but just a rush it gives me to pursue & I enjoy doing it even in my sleep.

Also I am not the only one doing it because there are companies building such rigs easily with 24 monitors or more if you can afford it.

I started doing it in last 6 months because I received tremendous help from people like you guys.

I like to daydream & hope you guys would be part of it & be proud of it.

Right now I am sticking with Win -7 because I tried Win -8 with one card & one monitor & it didn't work but I am hopeful that there is a single bug that can be weed out to make win -8 work.

Win -7 does not identify more than 10 monitors which Win -8 does & from what I read Win - 8 is supposed to be better for Multi Monitor than Win -7.

This thread has not been has helpful to you as it should have been, Dan. It needs to get on topic.

Regardless of whether he needs it or wants it, Win8 is what he needs help with. Suggesting Win7 isn't a fix and is obnoxious.

Why he bought what he bought also has little bearing on helping him and is an obnoxious question.

Some actual help: Odds are the bug isn't in the OS, but in the hardware or driver. You're suffering from a TDR, which means the video driver/GPU "froze" and the kernel had to reset the driver to fix it. A TDR is preferable to a BSOD/Kernel panic/hard reset, which is what would have happened in the old days.

Link

TDRs are caused by:

Bad hardware
Bugs in drivers

One of your video cards could be defective, damaged PCB trace, defective electrical component, bad GPU RAM, and/or cold solder joints.
AMD needs to address a bug in their driver.
