What to replace GTX 580 with?

Mon Apr 08, 2013 7:42 pm

Looking to sell my GTX 580 while it's still worth something. Was looking at either a 7850 or GTX 650Ti boost to replace it with. I don't have the time to play games like I used too and if need be I could attempt another crossfire/SLI setup. I game at 1080P. Won't be going larger or multiple monitors. From TR's and other reviews, I should be able to get away with both cards at this resolution, even if I have to turn down some settings. What do think I should do?

I have a GTX 570 and I'm not thinking of replacing it with anything under a GTX 670 or a 7950.

The case you presented, GTX 680 to HD7850, isn't enough of a performance delta, IMO.

You probably want to stick with your current card and wait until next-generation or two.

GTX 580 is still a powerhouse that can effortlessly handle 2Megapixel gaming without too much trouble.

I doubt you'll sell your 580 for much more than it will cost you to buy a new 650Ti, at least not once you've considered listing fees/shipping etc.

So unless you want a quieter, more efficient card, is there any point to changing it?

Doh, in my post above, I meant "I don't intend to replace it with anything under a 670..." . Spellcheck failure.

I'm with everyone else: not worth it, wait till at least next generation. That said, if you really do want to upgrade, I'd recommend something like EVGA's GTX670 FTW. That's a 670 built on a 680's PCB and OC'd. Out of the box it has more or less identical performance to a 680, with the superior cooling and build of the 680 reference, but at a good $100 or so cheaper than a 680. Darn quiet too. I think that for a premium product that can max out everything at 1080p it probably represents the best value. I've seen them on sale for $380, once even $360.

Titan SLI, and I'll take that slothful 580 off your hands ;)

You don't make it explicit, but it seems like you are okay accepting lower frames or lower detail in the switch - you are just looking to get solid 1080p performance and want to pocket some money in the exchange. I get that vibe since you use the word "replace" rather than "upgrade." Others seem to have read "upgrade" into your post. If I'm wrong, just stick with your 580 since it outclasses the HD 7850, GTX 650 Ti Boost, and GTX 660 or the difference is so small its not worth the money.

If you get lucky, you can probably sell your 580 for between $275 and $325 depending on how many GBs you got in there.

An HD 7850 or GTX 660 are solid choices for 1080p gaming as long as you aren't looking for rock solid 60fps or don't mind turning down the detail settings a bit on the newest games.

Microcenter has an MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III OC for $190 after rebates.

Microcenter also has a selection of 7850s for $190-$200 after MIR.

Newegg has these GTX 660s from EVGA and Asus for $180 and $190 respectively.

Newegg also has these 7850s for below $200.

Finally, Newegg has [url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130910] EVGA’s Superclocked version of the 650 Ti Boost] for $180.

I recently got a 7850 because it was cheaper than a comparable Nvidia card and also came with Bioshock: Infinite and Tomb Raider. Nvidia's offer of in-game currency is laughably terrible. I like the GTX 660 better as a card based on reviews, but I just felt that the 7850 was a better overall value, especially with the games. The 650 Ti Boost looks pretty solid too. Your mileage may vary, but I would expect the GTX 660 to outperform the 7850, but not by a huge margin. That said, the 7850 has done everything I’ve wanted it to do so far, though I only game on a 720p TV.

Thanks for the replies. I had thought about getting a GTX 670, but I don't need any more performance, as the 580 does the job. Just looking for something that was a little quieter and less power use.

In that case, I'll trade you my 470 for your 580. Deal?

If you are looking for quiet I can highly recommend this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814131473

I just got that card and it is very, very quiet. I replaced a passively cooled card with this card and while I could indeed hear the difference it was actually not easy to hear the difference and that was very surprising. This is the quietest fan-cooled graphics card I've had in years (at load it's the quietest I've ever had - at idle my old HD 4850 might have been as quiet or slightly quieter).

And the game bundle is pretty awesome.

Well with the TR article stating another game to added to the bundle with the 7XXX series looks like I will be checking out a 7850 when the bundle is set around May 1.

I've been in a similar situation to yours (Radeon 6970, running at 1920x1200), but every time I look, I can't really justify the swap yet.

My only current game that gets any time is Borderlands 2, and performance is still stellar with all of the settings cranked up. For the extra I'd have to pay for a good upgrade, I'm going to keep my card until another generation comes through.

Good choice IMO. You can buy the 7850 now and you'll get Blood Dragon once its released.

Looks like I'll be going after 7790 or 7850. While it s a little performance drop, the 580 is pretty noisy at full tilt.
