Need help choosing cooler fan

Wed Apr 10, 2013 7:37 am

Hello. Recently I've acquired a 3570K CPU and overclocked it to 4.3GHz but I had to unplug the speed adaptor of my Corsair A50 because temps would go a bit high. So now it cools out well but the fan at full speed is a bit noisy.

Is it possible to replace only the fan of the A50? Or must I buy a new cooler?

Thanks

Yeah, it looks like the fan is mounted on a bracket that connects to the heatsink. Any 120mm fan will work. I would suggest a 4-pin PWM fan like this Cougar model to guarantee your mobo can regulate it's speed.

I've not noticed that there is a bracket to connect the heatsink separated from the fan, that's good news :) I can stick to any 120mm fan right?

I don't have Cougar in my supplier, what do you think about Noctua, Phanteks, Noiseblockers or Scythe fans? I can see some similars to your suggestion

The S12A has a 3-pin connector (not PWM) so you'll be in the same boat you were with your stock Corsair A50 fan. Something like the NF-F12 PWM would be a better choice.

Where are you shopping?

A 120mm enermax magma should work great...only 18 db noise at full speed and they push some air. I own 2 of them.

What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I actually have an Enermax TB Silence PWM on my CPU right now, it's basically the same as the Magma except with PWM. Seems to work well while not costing a ton. I can't help but think the halo frame would work best in case-exhaust scenarios though.
Check these options out.
Noctua NF-F12
Eneramx TB Silence PWM
Be Quiet! Shadow Wings PWM

This is how I select CPU cooler fans (if I don't want to look up any review articles) in order of importance:
1) PWM or Variable Speed fan.
2) Highest Airflow:Noise ratio.
3) Highest static pressure.
4) If some sort of "airflow concentration tech" is advertised, that's always a plus.
Keep in mind that not all advertised specs are necessarily repeatable (or accurate) compared to real-world tests. Professional reviews/comparisons and customer ratings will weed those out pretty quick.

Thank you for your recommendations, i'll look into these :) I'm inclined to the Be Quiet fan looks powerful and matches nice my case and components :)

Keep an eye on the cost of a better cooler when you're making your decisions. (mostly applies to the Noctua fans)

Not much better than my A50 and not silent enough...

How about a Noctua NF-P12 PWM, NF-F12 PWM or NF-A15 PWM?

I chose the be quiet fan for the lower price and because although noctua fans are normally the best the colors wouldn't fit that well in my case... thanks for all suggestions :)

I've installed the Be Quiet fan, it's quiet indeed, i barely can hear the pc fans (I have 5 case fans with fan controller plus the cooler and the graphics card) its expensive but as an incredible airflow and silence thanks!
