Reason #431 why the world is doomed. Went to pick up tonight's pizza dinner to find that their computer had crashed. The only place where the order total is kept is on the computer, so the 2 20-something girls behind the counter were violently flailing away on a calculator and getting nowhere, mainly because they couldn't figure out how to add the tax. I grabbed the menu to get the prices, spent 15 seconds thinking about it, and told them what to charge me. They both looked at me as if I'd raised Lazarus.

I really wish I could be pinpoint accurate with percentages. I can usually get within 5 cents or so, but never quite that good. Unless it's something really round. But also not always knowing what the sales tax for whatever county I'm in as it varies.

It was a $28.90 tab with 9% tax. It's easier if you calculate 10% and then remove 1% just by moving the decimal. Add that to $29 and take off a dime. Voila. For quick mental math, working to the nearest zero is almost always your friend.

I would have gone up to 29, figured 9% of that (at $2.61), then subtracted 109% of the 10¢ difference (at 11¢) to get $29 +2.61 -0.11 = $31.50. Since I was once a broke college kid working in a pizzeria, I might have given them more and let them keep the change.

P.S.: Yes, I'm that guy that causes a delay at the drive-through because I hand the cashier $5.09 for my $4.84 meal and expect a quarter in change.

Yeah, I usually round off tips, but using 10% and 1% as guides makes quick work.

And since there are apparently 20-somethings out there who don't know how to figure sales tax from a calculator, if the tax is 6%, just multiply the subtotal by 1.06.

I know this bunch can probably figure that out or already knows it, but it's a simple conversion and ridiculously easy to do on calculator.

Your taxes are in nice even percents? Our sales tax is 8.25 percent (or maybe 8.35 now, I forget). I'd hate to have to do that in my head  I can do a single percent (usually) but once I have to start keeping track of decimals I can't keep it straight without writing stuff down.

edit: also, up at 5am with back pain  It is getting better but it still has its moments. Gaah.

Pah, try 20% sales tax over here :P

At least it's always in the sticker price though...

6% is actually what I was paying in Indianapolis. Chicagoland, as far as I've noticed, is different depending on which suburb you're in, and that seems to have an effect on the "roundness" of the percentage.

It's 8.25% here too. So annoying to do that math!

I'm doing physical therapy; I tore several muscles. The PT thinks I may have damaged some tendons or ligaments (she gave me the names but they were long and complicated) too but the only way to kn ow for sure would be surgery--and we're hoping that they heal up without that! But I've got a sheet of stretches and exercises to do daily, and then they torture me for an hour a couple times a week. It is actually improving; it's just a slow process and there's still bad days. Still, managed to make it through the zoo pushing a stroller today, which I wouldn't have been able to do a couple weeks ago.

It sucks, going from lifting 300+ lbs off the ground for reps to barely being able to pick up my son but I WILL get better and stronger!

Yay! Another lifter!

I'd like to lift 300+ lbs off the ground, but that's like 3.4x my body weight, so I don't think it's realistic for me. Hehe. I can snatch 105lbs tho, which I think is pretty good for someone my size! The squat is the easy part; it's the actual snatch that's hard for me. Hard to not fall over!

My wife and I spent Friday and Saturday up in Milwaukee, judging in the regionals for the National Homebrew Competition. Interesting couple of days.

I actually enjoy doing some of the oddball categories (which many beer judges tend to opt out of). While there's absolutely nothing wrong with trying to brew the perfect traditional Czech Pilsner or American Pale Ale, IMO the place where you really get to see homebrewers' creative side is in the categories where there's more leeway to try unusual methods or ingredients. At competitions I frequently judge the (in)famous "Specialty Beer" category (essentially the "none of the above" catch-all for anything that doesn't fit any established style). This time around I didn't do those, but did judge the "Spice/Herb/Vegetable" category and the "Smoke and Wood Aged" category, both of which had some very interesting entries. (And, as usual, a few that made you go "WTF were they thinking?")

I spent this weekend doing this: http://www.90fmtrivia.org/

First year my team got 33rd, last year we got 14th, and we're in the last hour right now and we're in 6th.

It's really, really fun. I'll make a post in the forums next year and see if anyone wants to join.

I suuuuuuuck at mental basic arithmetic, and end up ballparking and rounding up tips.

Like, the more abstract the math is (at least up to trig, never did anything with calculus), the EASIER I find it to do it in my head, but I break out the calculator for the basic stuff.

Yes, yes it is. Buy the fluid-filled teething rings and throw them into the freezer.

I celebrated Earth Day a day late, by cycle commuting into work today.

(I meant to do it yesterday as well, but I might have woken up 45 minutes after I was already supposed to be into work. Yeaaaahhhh.)

I'm buying a 3TB HDD soon. Anybody have any feelings on WD Red vs Green? Only a year difference in warranty. Drive will be used solely for media storage (movies, tv shows, pictures, music).

Sounds like Green is just fine. Reds give you warranty and are better suited for RAID and NAS apllications.

I got a WD 3TB external a few months back. After migrating the data off of the machine and blowing it away, going to pop the drive out of the case and mount it internal.

http://www.muscleandstrength.com/forum/ ... d-hawthorn 600lb deadlift, he's 132lbs. It's still 600lbs raw. Granted he's short and has long arms which gives him a huge mechanic advantage in the deadlift. Most people agree that 1X bodyweight bench, 1.75x bodyweight squat, and 2xbodyweight deadlift are sufficient strength. I'm a little over those and climbing... as is my weight :D

The PT has told me I probably shouldn't do conventional deads again so I don't know how I'll do on that :( I have a well over bodyweight bench; I finally felt good enough to do bench and pull ups this week and did 235 for sets of 5 on bench and sets of 5 band assisted pullups (got a bit squishy after hurting myself...gotta work that off!).
