For sipping

Sat Apr 27, 2013 10:59 pm

I've tried only the clear kinds of rum that you typically see in mixed drinks and I'm not a fan. Spiced rum is a little better, but I still don't like it straight. I hear there's a few brands of rum that are aged, or somethin', and they're good for sipping as opposed to mixing. Do any of you have a recommendation for a good sipping rum?

Ditto. I've been to the BVI distillery. They brand it as the single-malt scotch of rums and given its unique flavor profile I can't disagree. It certainly isn't the standard rum profile of burning 3-day old alcohol mixed with some sugar.

I've tried Pussers and still wouldn't sip it. I just consider rum best used for mixing rather than sipping.

I will give Pusser's a try. The recommendations, combined with the fact that I have to travel to a special liquor store to get it probably means it's an above average rum.

I rarely drink rum but I like Appletons Estate. Make a nice sipping rum for me when I need a change from whiskey.

Throw my vote in for Pussers as well.

Other than that, I'm becoming a fan of Kracken. Maybe not for sipping, but it's my go-to for mixed drinks these days.

Gonna be hard to beat a Barbancourt 5 star for the money (~$25). Aged 8 years, made in Haiti. Yum. Makes Bacardi taste like piss.

Ron Zacapa 23 year
Zaya 12 year
or Pyrat XO

All should be attainable for around $40 and all 3 of them are very good.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll try and get a sample of all of 'em. For now, the fruits of my first rum efforts are in the Drinking NOW thread.

Darkmage: Kracken is awesome for mixing. Lady at the local liqour store turned me onto it maybe 6 months ago? Dirt cheap here--they run sales on the 1.75 liter bottles for 21 bucks semi-regularly (every couple of months). And so much better at mixing than Bacardi or most of the Captain Morgan rums. I have had it straight when some friends and i were taste testing lower end rums and though it was the best of hte lot straight and mixed.

Have you considered taking the step over to whiskey?

Definitely would consider this. I've tried plenty of run, and I have to force myself to drink it. Good Irish or Scotch whiskey is amazingly better.
