BIOS failure

Fri May 03, 2013 9:30 am

Hi all, over the past year and a have or so I have been having reasonably frequent (bout every 2/3 months) BIOS failures. That is, when I boot the computer the BIOS fails to boot (no sound) and nothing comes up.
I have to flash the BIOS using the Jumpers and more recently I have to take out the CMOS battery. Another one occured just this morning and I thought it may have been the one that did my computer in. So my question is, what is this problem caused by if anyone knows. Is it a failure of the mobo, the psu or simply the cmos battery. I'd wanna know simply because if I had to go in on a new computer I'd like to carry as many parts as I can into the new one. Thanks for the help!

Specs:
i7 920
asus p6t deluxe v2
GTX 285
Corsair 750 PSU
8G ram

I'd say 100% mobo issue and if you had any warranty left, I'd have tried that route after the first couple o' times.

Good suggestion but the mobo went out of warranty I'm guessing 3 years from its sell date which would mean it ended october 2012.

Sounds like the motherboard. Also a chance it could be the PSU, but this is less likely.

Are you running at stock settings?

As an aside, resetting the BIOS with the jumpers isn't "flashing" the BIOS. Flashing the BIOS is where you download a BIOS file from the manufacturer's web site, and use a BIOS flash utility (which can be part of the existing BIOS, or run from a bootable thumbdrive) to update the motherboard's BIOS code. What you're doing with the jumper (or by removing the battery) is called a "CMOS reset".
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Just brew it!, yes running stock settings.
And yeah thanks, getting the words swapped since I tried flashing to solve it after the fact. MY B.

It's worth trying a new CMOS battery first before condemning the motherboard.

Yeah I swapped out new batteries about 6 months ago, problem persists.

Sounds like a bad board to me, but I'm not an expert on BIOS. My own board seems to get corrupted BIOS about once every two months, but the board has a backup BIOS that it auto-restores so it's more an inconvenience than a showstopper for me.
