Removing stock galaxy gtx 670 fan shroud and heatsink

Sun May 05, 2013 7:04 am

Hi guys, new to TR. I had a question concerning removal of a stock reference fan shroud for the gtx 670 (this 670 is on the 680 reference board). Im looking to remove the shroud, clean up the heatsink and apply some MX-2 to the gpu in hopes of getting the annoying whine associated with the reference 680 nvidia cooler to go away. Would applying new TIM drop the temperatures, I dont want to add an aftermarket cooler, just looking to get temps down a few degrees so I can run the fan a little lower. Heres the card that I have; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814162107

Thanks all for you help in advance.

Replacing the TIM will -probably- lower the temperature, but it's unlikely to be a huge difference. You could try adjusting the fan profile with a tool like MSI Afterburner to see if you can get a more pleasing balance :)
