Razer Edge [& Blade]

Thu Mar 28, 2013 10:13 pm

Wait, do we really not have a thread about it somewhere? :-?

I'm just reading some of the first reviews and I have to say I am a little in love. It really looks like Razer did the best job possible with the currently available hardware but it also looks like version 2.0 will really be the one to get (just like with the Blade). For now I'm still plenty happy with my W110ER but I could see myself buying the Edge 2.0 in a year or so if I wanted something even more portable (and something I could stash in my TechSling /shameless plug). Here's hoping they really nail the keyboard dock when it eventually comes out.

I rather enjoyed playing with one at CES...but for the price (with the extended battery and the controller) I'd probably save my money for the next iteration.

They are surprisingly heavy.

I've said this before, but even the people who hate Razer have to appreciate their willingness to innovate.

I'd be very curious to try one. Anyone know if they are doing in-store demos?

100% agree. I would complain about the price if it was something less innovative but as it is I'd be willing to cover some R&D...

Blade, Edge, Deathstalker, Naga, the 360 controllers, Hydra...

Yeah, products made with gaming in mind. Build quality or no, they're trying and willing to change the game.

Still happy with my W110ER but the new 14" Blade sure looks nice. :o

Not sure what's there "innovative" - just a generic oversized Win8 tablet custom-specced by Razer to include GPU powerful enough to run some games at low settings (and powerful enough to drain battery in a couple of hours of gaming) and a detachable gaming controller. A controller which existed in many forms for many years for many Android/iOS smartphones and tablets:

Same goes for keyboard dock or TV connection. But I guess for some people everything that Razer makes is an "innovation" which should be "praised" even when being barely usable in real world

Personally I am perfectly satisfied with my HTC One and iPad for ALL mobile gaming needs - there's always something new to play on both Apple Store and Google Play store and they provide much longer battery life (which is the most important metric for a MOBILE device) even when playing games. For everything else - there's home PC.

:D There is no "point" except sharing a personal subjective opinion about a certain product. Which I did as well.

Try playing Civ5 or Starcraft 2 on your phone or tablet.

Oh wait, you can't do that.

Oh boy, you're a persistent one...

Why would I intentionally cripple my enjoyment of PC games with inferior controller device, tiny display and hardware which is BARELY able to play some PC games like Civ5 at lowest settings?
Image
Especially when it comes to multiplayer-enabled PC games such as SC2 where portability is absolutely irrelevant and the proper controls and high-performing hardware components (CPU/GPU/NIC) are more important?

Once again - I prefer to enjoy my mobile-oriented games on my existing devices such as smartphone and mass-market tablet, while enjoying PC-oriented games on my PC or a powerful full-sized laptop, all of which give me 0 compromises. If other people will be willing to put up with huge amount of drawbacks/compromises that the Razer Edge unnecessarily creates just so they can impress their friends with such device (or force their own kids to suffer with it) - they can most certainly do so  I, however, will not.

30 FPS in a turn-based strategy game? I'm not really concerned.

Can you name another tablet (or laptop) that can out-game the Razer equivalent?

Laptop? Sure, take a look at the same graph
Tablet? Abso-frickin'-lutely! My iPad. You know how many games are available on Apple's App Store? And the amazing thing is, ALL of them work perfectly at their max settings and NONE of the "multiplayer"-enabled games there will provide someone with an unfair "advantage" in terms of significantly superior controls and hardware! Unlike with this Razer crap (go and try playing SC2 on it against a good PC opponent). And NO, you do NOT need an oversized, overweight, battery-wasting "whatchamacallit innovation" from Razer to enjoy such beautiful, story-rich 3D games as "The Bard's Tale" or "Star Wars: KotOR" - they run perfectly on iPad too.
Shall we continue this pointless conversation?

I don't understand the malice, but whatever. You're clearly not willing to have an actual conversation.

There is no malice. What would be the point of such one-sided (where I seem to answer questions using real-life examples and objective data but all I get back is "...you're missing the point") conversation? I have expressed my subjective opinion fully and it is highly unlikely to change. Just as the blind worshipping of "miraculous" Razer deity... err... I mean "the subjective opinions of other fine gentlemen about such classy establishment as Razer"

Nobody is worshiping Razer. I liken them to the Apple of the Windows world.

You pay more but you get an incredibly aesthetically pleasing product with good performance and great features that are hard to find in other products.

It's a Macbook Pro optimized for gaming. Nice. I always wanted one of those, but not for the price of a Macbook Pro. I guess Razer needs to expand their notebook manufacturing capacity before they can get their prices down though.

Aesthetics yeah, I'll give you that. However, I've never been particularly impressed with the quality of their products, both hardware and software. This thing looks like it will heat up like...like a french fry in a furnace.
