New desktop for cousin

Sun May 26, 2013 5:38 am

Hey guys, my cousin has enlisted my services to come up with a build for him as his sister is moving out of home and taking the PC with them:

I have come up with:

Case: CoolerMaster Elite 341 with 420W
Mobo: ASRock FM2A55M-DGS
CPU: AMD A10 5800K 4-Core Processor
RAM: Corsair CMV16GX3M2A1333C9 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3
SSD: Samsung 840 Series 120GB SSD Retail Box
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM003
DVD: Pioneer DVR-220LBKS Black 24x DVDRW OEM
Monitor: BenQ GL2450HM 24in Widescreen LED Monitor
Keyboard/Mouse: Microsoft Wired Desktop Keyboard 600
OS: Microsoft Windows 8 64bit OEM

+ Microsoft Office 2013 home/student

I used the AMD A10 processor because it has a decent integrated graphics.

OR:

Case: CoolerMaster Elite 341 with 420W
Mobo: ASRock B75M-DGS-R2 Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core i3 3220
RAM: Corsair CMV16GX3M2A1333C9 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3
SSD: Samsung 840 Series 120GB SSD Retail Box
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM003
DVD: Pioneer DVR-220LBKS Black 24x DVDRW OEM
Monitor: BenQ GL2450HM 24in Widescreen LED Monitor
Keyboard/Mouse: Microsoft Wired Desktop Keyboard 600
OS: Microsoft Windows 8 64bit OEM

The difference is about $10 either way.

What are your opinions? The PC will pretty much be used for youtube, pr0n and some internet games like Runescape, maybe the casual Counterstrike Source etc.

For Trinity, look for a motherboard with 4 DIMM slots, HDMI output and the A75 or A85 chipset.
ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M
Gigabyte GA-F2A75M-D3H
Asus F2A85-M Pro

On the Intel side, you might want to wait 2 weeks for Haswell (e.g.: Core i5-4430 or Core i5-4670K) to appear. Haswell's release with new LGA1150 motherboards may push prices down on LGA1155 motherboards, even if Ivy Bridge Core i3 processors aren't likely to get cheaper immediately. The suggestion to look for 4 DIMM slots and HDMI output stands, even if you stay with LGA1155.
ASRock B75-Pro3-M
Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H
Asus P8H77-M
Asus P8Z77-M

You definitely want PC3-14900 (DDR3-1866) memory instead of that pokey PC3-10600 stuff that you've listed. 16 GiB is probably more than you need. 2x4 GiB would be enough to start with.

For the same price, you could get an IPS LCD monitor instead of a TN LCD.

Intel graphics are a total joke so if you're going GPU-less I would definitely get the APU. The i3 is going to be the better performing chip otherwise, so if the plan is to get a discrete GPU later I'd say wait for Haswell to launch. If nothing else it will cause a price drop on some of the older stuff.

I don't agree that 4 DIMM slots is necessary; 2x8GB is enough RAM for the life of the machine. I like the Biostar Hi-Fi A85S3 motherboard, which has excellent integrated audio and a nice layout.

I don't agree with this recommendation; DDR3-1866 all the way for sure, but buying 4GB DIMMs at this point is just folly imo.

But the GL2450HM is the official console monitor of the MLG! Hahaha...

What an overpriced garbage display. If you want a REAL gaming monitor, get the XL2420T, or an ASUS VG248QE. If you want a nice monitor that can also game, get the IPS234V that JAE is recommending. If you want a REAL NICE monitor, get a Dell U2413 or something like a Catleap/Shimian/etc (Korean IPS.)

I wouldn't say Intel graphics are "a total joke" (HD 4000 with dual-channel 1866 plays UT3 acceptably in 1080p!), but if you intend to do any gaming on the machine I'd definitely get the AMD APU.

If you guys want to create me a wish list, here is the site I use:

http://www.pccasegear.com

I need to allow around $40 for shipping though.

I've got a budget of $1000, including Windows 8, Microsoft Office 2013, Speakers, keyboard mouse etc, it needs to be a full computer setup.

The reason I picked that TN monitor was its the cheapest 24" LCD monitor getting around.

TN LCD discussion has been spun off into its own thread.
