No love for Richland?

Tue Jun 04, 2013 4:37 pm

With the day wrapping up and the chips for sale on NewEgg I just have to think out loud about the coverage of Richland... Why the complete dearth of reviews? Yeah, so it's not super exciting, but neither is Haswell on the desktop... Nothing though? From anyone? Maybe I'm more attached to AMD's APUs than most but I would like to see just how well the new power management features are working out, maybe see if there is some additional headroom for overclocking IGP, specifically on the 65w parts... Did AMD drop the ball and not send anything out? Was Haswell just so massive of a launch that the timing couldn't have been worst? Or is Richland literally just not worth writing about? Inquiring minds want to know (or at least mine does).

One thing to remember: TR & most other review sites usually only publish reviews for samples that the OEMs (e.g. AMD) send to them. It's unclear if AMD bothered to send out Richland samples to TR and other review sites. I've been pestering anyone who would listen for a review of the ultra-low wattage Trinity parts since January of 2012, and outside of comments from purchasers on retail sites, I have never once seen an in-depth review at TR or any other first-tier review site. I don't think that's because TR & company wouldn't be interested in doing a review. Instead, I think it's because they never had the opportunity to run the review.

Hopefully AMD has or will be sending out Richland samples soon, particularly the low-power samples.

I don't think AMD sent many (or any for that matter) out. I know I haven't seen any at review sites yet (and I don't have one either).

Lack of review samples is my understanding. AMD did not really bother putting any out.

The press embargo hasn't lifted, and I guess folks are being nice about not publishing yet. Techincally, though, there's no agreement to enforce once the thing's available to buy.

I'm testing a 6800K right now, but won't have a review ready for the embargo lift. Will be a little longer. Putting an FX-6350, i3-3225, and i7-3790X through in parallel. Have to do another round of four after that.

You're dedication is appreciated! I guess you go through dry-spells when there isn't too much going on, and then you get these hurricanes of one product after another... but we can wait!

Awesome!! any chance of "same clock speed" comparisons ? (even if only between AMD cpus ?)

Well, Kaveri's just around the corner so I don't think AMD will be producing a lot of Richland chips, especially with the truckloads of Trinity chips out there that can serve the market well enough. AMD obviously doesn't want to be left with entire warehouses of unsellable Richland chips the way Llano chips are stuck collecting dust somewhere out there.

Here's an article to cheer you up, though. :) Check out the Steamroller die shot: that should be enough to make you forget about Richland and get excited about Kaveri. :)

Yeah Richland does seem entirely forgettable. I might consider it for a laptop if I needed one soon, but for anything else....no.

It really depends. I'm ok with building a Llano-based desktop for light workloads as long as I can still find a good board for it and I can get the specific Llano APU for a good price relative to newer, better products.

I am also looking for Richland info, but more on the laptop side. On the laptop side, AMD has claimed large gains for the ULV parts. However, even 35W parts appear to be much improved, through both base clock speed bump and by virtue of being able to hit Turbo more often. As a datapoint, I found (via notebookcheck.net ) that A10-4600M does about 2.0 on Cinebench 11.5 multithreaded and A10-5750M (Richland) does about 2.3 which is about a 15% improvement. That is a nice improvement on the CPU side, which has been the achilles heel for Trinity.

I am on the lookout for Richland laptops. So far I have found MSI GX60 and GX70 being updated to 5750M from 4600M, and HP upgrading several Trinity offerings (such as Sleekbook) to Richland. However, i have not seen any interesting announcements from other OEMs.

Still nothing? We've had multiple reviews for anything remotely related to Haswell and not a single mention of the 6800K? Are you waiting for Kaveri or what?

I've just... I just....

...tested too many processors.

And IGPs.

We are compiling the results now and prepping for publication. Hang tight.

Ok, here's a little preview for you. Still unedited. If you find typos, let me know! Thanks.

It looks good to me. Would it be appropriate to credit Intel's manufacturing process lead over Global Foundries rather than blaming AMD's engineering team for higher power consumption?

Could you include one of the huge charts from the Haswell article that listed a ridiculous number of processors? I'm curious how the Deneb based Phenom II compares to the latest models.

Page 1, under the die shot:

"Richlands adds three big things that AMD simply didn't have time to include in the first generation of products based on this chip."

Either Richlands or adds needs to lose an S. Your choice; correct either way.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Weird. I don't recall blaming anyone for higher power consumption.
