Maybe splitting hairs with this question but I got a GTX 650 Ti 1GB for my new budget build.

After it arrived I found this-- GTX 650 for roughly the same price.

The 650ti has 1gig ram at 5400MHz with 768 cuda cores
The 650 has 2 gigs ram at 5000MHZ wth 384 cuda cores.

Which is better more cores or more ram? or are they effectively the same?

IMO, both cards are too slow to fully utilize 2GB of RAM, especially on a 128 bit bus. I would just go with the 650Ti with 1GB if I were you, unless you have a specific task in mind which requires tons of VRAM .

Ninja Edit: This article explains the difference pretty clearly: The GTX650 is an overclocked GT640, the 650Ti is a cut-down GTX660.

Thanks for the link and for the explantion. My google skills failed me and I missed that article. I feel better that I got the 650ti.

This build is for school so I believe don't need the extra Vram at this point if the bottleneck is the processor and the bit bus.

Not sure I'd say the 650's an overclocked 640, per se - the main differentiating factor comes from the 650's use of GDDR5, versus the 640's DDR3. There's a chasm of difference in the resulting bandwidth, and the 650's much better-equipped to handle demanding rendering scenarios as a result.

As for the rest? Yeah, there's probably not much reason to spring for 2 gigs of VRAM on the 650 unless you plan to work with some very large data sets...

I'm on my cell so I can't give you any examples but there is very little (no) chance that any 650 could outperform a 650Ti. When you're that low on the totem pole (ie, 7790 / 650Ti Boost or lower) don't get hooked into marketing schemes offering more vram on a GPU that could never take at vantage of it. You made the right decision.

650Ti wins handily. 1GB has been a standard amount for about five years because it's all you realistically need for running a single <=1080p display unless you have very specific needs from a texture-heavy mod.
