NewEgg Shell Shocker Radeon 6970 2GB $159.99

Tue Jun 25, 2013 3:47 pm

As I already have one 6970, this was a no-brainer. If you're a GPGPU person, this is also a good deal. Through the end of the day, free shipping.

Let us know how those older GPU's are doing in Crossfire with newer drivers and newer game patches. I sold my HD6950 2GB cards off (well, one went to a sibling) after the GTX670 came out, as it was theoretically slower but felt at least 50% faster.

Also, glad you snagged a good deal on a great card!

Will do. Every time I saw a deal on Radeon 7870's, I went back to TR reviews and just didn't see enough performance difference to justify. Which meant a 7950 or 7970 to up the ante, which cost a fair amount more.

I figure adding this can merit some fun, maybe up my Folding@Home scores considerably, and not cost a lot. Sure, it's not GCN, but I'm using a single 24" 1920x1200 monitor, so I think I'm good for awhile.

The Egg is also selling the previous top-end 6970 for $159.99. Brand new Sapphire card.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 202035-L0A

I bought one so I can crossfire with my current card. A single one is still no slouch.

You posted again for another sale, great- but you disappointed me! I still want to know how well a pair of those cards is working out for you.

Airman, that is now the regular price, probably until they are gone.

My second card came while I was onsite for a client site this weekend. I just put it in tonight, half an hour ago.

I've only had a chance to run 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11. Both of those show huge increases in performance, probably not quite double. I admit they aren't real games, but it's amazing how much faster they are, it's visible. Seeing as I'm at 1920x1200, I'm pretty much maxed out for single monitor performance.

Hopefully on July 4th, I'll get more of a chance for testing. I'm going to up Skyrim to the max, and do some Borderlands 2 with everything on (most everything was turned on, but I was getting occasional hitches here or there). Probably a little Deus Ex too, since I never got far into that after I played it, and I'll let you know.

Oh, one other thing. Running both Vantage and 11, I didn't notice a real noise increase over my one 6970.

If you already have one 6970, I don't think you can lose. If you're a budget gamer, one of these should still be amazing for the price.

P.S. One note: It doesn't come with a crossfire cable. The description says it does, but the pictures don't, and that's the reality. I used the one from my first card (an XFX reference design).

Good to hear that it went in well, and sorry to jump the gun on you- I do know what it's like to have new hardware in hand and have to wait to use it.

My experience was similar- in my system with two of them (stock blowers and settings), framerates were not a problem, and the blowers have an unobtrusive sound profile, though they're definitely louder than my current GTX670's. Though those cards probably draw less power under load, given that they're usually outrunning my 4.6GHz 2500k, even at 1600p. And your HD6970's are probably faster at 1200p than my GTX670's are at 1600p for a lot of things; I just wish that AMD's driver situation was better. When I realized just how bad they were (I was probably getting effectively 2/5th to 3/5th the framerate FRAPs was reporting), and the GTX680 was released, I knew they had to go; they weren't going to cut it for 1600p at the time for BF3 Multiplayer, and that's what I'd bought them for.

The beta drivers currently out pretty much resolve all problems with my HD6970s in CF. Had I not gotten a HELL of a deal with 2 25% off coupons, I'd probably be sporting them still. I have 2 Titans now. (Also thankful someone bought both of my 6970s for $400 cash.)

Congratulations are always in order for successful business transactions! What was your net investment to go from CF to dual Titans, if you don't mind sharing, so that the rest of us can just be jealous :).

$1100 + shipping & tax, I'd guess.

Titans are $999 each, but actually only $750 thanks to coupons, so $1500 + shipping & tax.
Subtract $400 for the pair of 6970's sold.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

Not bad at all, really, given the utility you got out of them, congrats!

Just be advised that AMD recently removed OpenCL standards compliant double-precision (fp64) support for Radeon 69xx as well as Trinity based upon VLIW4 shaders as well. Likely they discovered a bug or something in their implementation. They do support their own proprietary fp64 extension but they have provided very little and/or confusing documentation about how it differs from the standard compliant one. Thus, I am currently not trusting it to handle some scientific code that I am working on.

edit: To clarify, Radeon 58xx as well as GCN cards are unaffected and continue to support Khronos fp64 extension cl_khr_fp64 while 69xx and Trinity/Richland only seem to support cl_amd_fp64 extension.

If all these AMD cards are on consistent sales surely the 9000 series is just around the corner?

Something is always around the corner :).

But I don't see AMD doing anything better than what they have now. They can change model numbers all they want, but they'll have to put out a new GPU with more physical shaders and a wider physical memory controller. Now that would be very cool, but it'd also not be very cool 8).

6970 isn't exactly CoolnQuiet. ;) I replaced the stock blower cooler on my 6950 with a dual fan Thermalright cooler because of the noise during gaming. I'm still using the card and I run it unlocked and overclocked. It runs everything fine for me.

One quirky experience besides RAGE (lol) has been Crysis 3. Tessellation has corruption and there is some other occasional image corruption. I've found threads of other people with trouble so it's not just me. Maybe drivers and patches have fixed it now though. I haven't played it for months.

But I'm not sure how much AMD works on drivers for preGCN cards anymore. I don't think I'd buy one.

There really aren't a huge number of bugs left to work out., so as long as they continue with any bugfixes, I don't need them to break a lot of new ground with drivers.

Borderlands 2 plays really nice. I'm very happy with that. Skyrim, on the other hand, is really fast...but there's moments (usually when moving towards objects that are very close, like rocks in a cave) where there is a bit of a jitter. I need to play some more titles for further testing.

I don't have additional noticeable noise in Crossfire. Seriously. Not saying there isn't added noise or heat, but I can't hear it above the standard level my rig was at before.
