Eyefinity at 3840x1024 on Radeon HD 7850 2GB

Thu May 30, 2013 10:56 am

Hello folks,

It looks like I am going for a poor man's eyefinity. I have a couple of 1680x1050 monitors that I use now, but I also have an even older 1280x1024 monitor. I figure I'll put the 4:3 monitor in the middle and a 16x10 on either side. From what I understand, in eyefinity each monitor has to be the resolution of the poorest monitor in the league. In my case, that's the 1280x1024 monitor. That equates to a total resolution of 3840x1024, or just over the pixel count of a 1440p monitor.

The peripheral monitors will get stretched by about 25%, which I honestly don't think I'm going to notice as I'll be paying more attention to the central screen as it is. And from what I hear, the peripheral monitors often get naturally stretched by the game anyway, so I'm not really sacrificing a perfect experience. I'm most interested in playing Bioshock Infinite in this resolution. Yes, I've already beaten the game, but it's the first single-player game I've played that I am actually enjoying more the second time around. You just notice more things, especially when you know how it ends.

Performance-wise, the 7850 2GB is supposed to be able to dip into 1440p territory (which is about the pixel count I'm going to have) while dropping down a few settings depending on the situation. Obviously less demanding games can be pushed beyond what I'm targeting here, which may prove to be entertaining as well.

The only investment I need to make now is to buy the StarTech Active DisplayPort->DVI adapter. For me this accessory is frustratingly overpriced ($30), and scratches at the price of a new monitor. So I have looked into monitors that come with DisplayPort, but there seldom are low-end monitors with that connection. NewEgg had a 1080p for about $100 but they discontinued it the day after I wish-listed it (no money right now). That sucked. Are there other web sites that let you browse monitors by what connections they have? Ebay and Amazon are lacking. Even better would be if you guys know of a cheaper way to get ahold of the DisplayPort->DVI adapter.

My final question is, what are your thoughts on mixing and matching aspect ratios in eyefinity? I read that the screen just stretches. But I don't think a 25% stretch on side-view monitors is going to matter. I get worse an experience from my side view mirrors on my car.

I would not advocate running your monitors at non-native aspect ratios. It's bad enough looking at non-native resolutions without that additional distortion.

Get a cheaper adapter, and try it out. You already have the monitors, so why not.

check the link (sorry I don't know how to shorten these things...)

That is a PASSIVE adapter. It will not work. You need an active adapter like the one that the OP linked.

Hmm this is a good point. What I'll do then is pick one up locally instead of at NewEgg because of the easier return procedure (in case it's too sucky).

Oops. Sorry about that. An active is necessary because...? Just curious, so when would a non-active adapter be useful?

I was able to come up with some good results on an ebay search for Active DisplayPort to DVI adapters.

This one seems legit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251120074686

Does anyone have any experience with that Kingwin model?

Edit - the 'Egg apparently has the scoop on this "active" displayport adapter:

this is the one you need...see how it has an extra USB cable for power which makes it active.

but a $70 it hardly seems worth it. just depends how bad you want to try out eyefinity with mis-matched monitors i guess.

The StarTech one goes for $30 already, MORE is not what I am looking for, lol. And that is a Mini DisplayPort variant. I guess I am just too spoiled by seeing HDMI and DVI cables going for <$5 that this DisplayPort adapter goes for so much more.

The difference is that there is dedicated video processing (and pretty high speed electronics) in an active adapter. The active adapter converts the true DP signal, which is a packet based signal along the lines of Ethernet, USB, and PCI, to a DVI signal which is a high speed synchronous (has a separate clock signal) serial bus. The converter has to buffer the incoming DP data packets, serialize them, generate the DVI display clock, then send the data out over the DVI connection. This is different from the passive DP->DVI adapter which will only work on a Dual-mode compatible ports. The "passive" adapter simply does signal voltage level translations. The dual-mode DP port actually generates the DVI format compatible signals.

The reason you have to have an active adapter is that the 7850 can only generate two DVI clock signals on the card. This means it can only directly drive two DVI based displays, regardless on which connector you use. The active DP->DVI adapter takes care of generating the third DVI clock that the card cannot.

SecretSquirrel, that is an amazing description. Of all the searches I've done on Active DisplayPort I have not come across a description so enlightening. Thanks for that. I wish I could +rep you for that.

This seems to come up periodically. There's good information about setting up Eyefinity available on AMD's website.
