ipconfig >TEXT.txt ---- Access is denied.

Sun Aug 04, 2013 7:13 am

I can have resutls of "ipconfig" command displayed but unable to create a text file. "Access is denied" is returned. What could be wrong?

Have you tried running cmd.exe as an admin?

My first guess is you do not have write permissions in the directory that you are in. When ou open up cmd you are usually put under the sys32 directory, i think, which a user would not have write permissions to. Execute ad admin, or, better, cd to your home directory. If you execute this in power shell you can use > $HOME\filename.txt

I added a path ahead of TEXT.txt so that the file will be saved on the desktop and the file was created. Thanks for your help.

another thing most people don't notice is that users don't have access to write to C:\ any more.

a lot of old bad habits die hard. :D

Can use "%UserProfile%\Documents\iplog.txt". Caveat is that you have not redirected the Documents folder.

I'm not familiar with that acronym. "Inadvertent Fatigue Induced F*** Up", perhaps?

This reminds me of this utility program we have for some proprietary interface at my work. It would only work from your home directory, and we were never sure why. It was on Solaris, and it didn't seem to be because of permissions, nor did it appear to actually log/write anything. We only had the binary, and weren't all that interested, but it baffled us because the error message given was a non sequitur.

And, of course, the company that "supports" didn't know anything about it anymore and didn't want to. As usual.
