Oh Kabini, where art thou?

Tue Aug 27, 2013 5:18 am

My HTPC is getting a little long in the tooth (and somewhat noisy). I was hoping to replace it's interior with a Kabini mini ITX board, but it seems these are as rare as Unicorns. Where did all the Kabini systems go? Several manufacturers were showing them off at Computex, IIRC.

Is it a lack of demand? Or is AMD too busy making PS4/XBONE CPUs at TSMC, causing a supply issue?

It seems I may just have to wait for Kaveri; it will certainly be more capable.

What do you do with your HTPC? I use netflix a lot on mine and Kabini would probably not be able to play HD video. The 2.0GHz quad core might but it''s hard to say without reviews of the chip. If it were me, I'd probably wait until kaveri regardless for HTPC use.

That said, I hear your frustration. I really want to replace my notebook soon and Kabini looks like it will fit the bill perfectly. Sadly, the only things I can find right now are systems build around Temash or giant 15.6" - 17" notebooks.

Clearly a fab capacity issue then, it would appear. If MS and Sony are launching on very similar silicon in a couple of months and low end version are already shipping in laptops, then I doubt there any issues with the design or function of the chips.

D'oh!

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad AMD found console success (even though I think that for long life of consoles Jaguar is a bit anemic) but damn AMD, can't you get anything done on time? If fricken' Kaveri had been ready instead of Richland, or even better Trinity you would be ruling the world right now (well, part of it anyway!)... :x Kabini is cool stuff, we want it, get your act together - oh and at least get some tablet design wins with Temash while you're at it, ok (a beefy Kabini tablet would be even better)? :P
