Good day,
The wife has a bunch of old VHS tapes of her childhood that take up a ton of space, so I would like to put them on the hard drive to save space.

My questions are
1. What is the best/fastest/easiest way to do this?
2. How can I get the best quality?
2. What equipment do I require?
3. What would be the best file type to put the videos in? (I may want to burn them back to DVD's after)

I recall once I used my ati tv tuner to input the vhs to the pc and record directly, but I think that was using the catalyst software in XP which doesn't work with Windows 7 (I'm using 64-bit professional)

2. Dump it as raw via the s-video connection on the VCR, then encode however you want.

3. VCR, a way to input video to the PC.

4. DVD is MPEG2 so maybe when you encode it, use that format.

your TV tuner software should work. I plug an old VHS player into the TV tuner, hit play, adjust input method to find the VHS over cable, rewind, and time a record/play start to match what I want. Your TV tuner should also offer capture settings. Save to a format you want.
