Huge fire at Hynix!

Wed Sep 04, 2013 11:59 am

http://www.kitguru.net/components/memor ... explosion/

September 4th, 2013 at 1:04 pm - Author faith

World DRAM prices are set to rocket as news comes in that Hynix FABs 1 and 2 have been engulfed in a ball of flame following a huge chemical explosion.

UPDATE: We have just heard that several major memory suppliers have stopped shipments – read more here.

Reports are still coming in, but the effects are immediate – with memory prices already shooting up by 10% in the first hour after reports started.

This is one of the main factories for nVidia GDDR5 we are told, so expect a major issue for the green team with production and pricing. That said, As nVidia begin to switch to other sources, so AMD’s price for Radeon RAM will also jump up.

Hynix makes 30% of the world’s memory in this area, and now it will lose half its production, so world production will drop by 15%.

All figures are approximate – we are getting news in from our Far East sources as we type.

I hope the employees weren't hit too hard!

Indeed.

Second thought was the 8GB of DDR5 going into each PS4...

Planning on building a server soon, might as well grab the ram now...

This is NOT the first time that a large fire at a memory manufacturing facility was responsible for driving up the price of RAM BTW. There was another big fire back in the early '90s that had a similar effect: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1993-0 ... -will-rise

Gee... I wonder if the plant was insured...

Does anyone know if GPU prices will be significantly affected in the coming months?

Any business asset that size will be insured. The problem is that you can't rebuild a leading-edge semiconductor fab in six months.

All I know is the hard drive stuff sucked real bad, and they took the opportunity to go from 4 to 2 suppliers on paper even though factories didn't really change.

Prices STILL haven't been the same since then, bunch of BS.

Reuters is reporting that Hynix says that the explosion/fire did not damage the clean room/production part of the facility and production should be back up 'soon'.

Glad to hear it's temporary and that only one person was injured (no deaths).

The first reports I heard said that the clean room was toast, glad to hear they should be back up soon. I've been piecing together the parts for a new system, and prices for DRAM seem to have shot up about 10% to 15% in the last week. I sure hope the industry doesn't milk this like they did with the hard disk factories, where WD's profits hit new record highs a few months after the flood.

**** and prices already seemed high for half a year now. DDR3 won't likely ever drop from now on...

BTW, is there any update on the situation? Victims, extent of damage, how long it will take to repair them?

This story says they are shifting DRAM production to their other fab to minimize disruption to DRAM supplies, and that the damaged factory will resume full production by November.
