What to do with my old HW: Core2Duo E6420 ...

Wed Sep 11, 2013 8:14 am

I just rebuilt my HTPC last weekend, and so far it looks like it was a success. That also means I've got some components that I'm not planning to do anything with...

....do you guys have any ideas?

I was going to suggest giving it away here, or contributing to a frankenbox or something (though honestly, the last time I had such thoughts, the action never materialized). I don't really need money for any of it, I'd just rather send it somewhere it might be useful still, instead of tossing it away.

(and yes, I know we have a Bargain Basement forum, but I'm more polling you guys for ideas right now).

1x Core 2 Duo E6420
1x Gigabye GA-p35-DQ6 (P35) motherboard
1x Thermalright Ultra 120 tower heatsink
2x 2GB Corsair DDR2 ram
1x Corsair HX520 PSU (with most but not all cables)

Note, components are 6 years old.

My mythtv frontend is running an Athlon 64 X2 3800+, that's 8 years old hardware.

I have a machine of that era that I repurposed into a file/backup server. Get yourself one or two big hard drives and Bob's your uncle.

I went with Ubuntu Server, but FreeNAS would be pretty simple to set up on this. You'd want a small flash drive to boot the operating system from for FreeNAS.

That's be a very capable backup server with a cheap RAID card and a few big HDDs. I'd probably upgrade the PSU to something new just to avoid blowing things up though. :P
