TR Frankenbot 2013

Sat Sep 07, 2013 5:01 pm

Yeah, it's still early, but I want to see what kind of interest there is. I am looking forward to it this year!

I think I can contribute 2 to 3 million points to the effort this year, which is more than 10 times what I was able to do last year.

Anybody else?

Should have a couple of FX-8320s I can turn loose, at least. Maybe a couple of Phenom II systems as well if I get off my butt and cobble some stuff together from the parts pile. No GPU clients, unfortunately... since I don't game any more, my GPUs are all pretty weak.

Some one want to explain about Frankenbot? Keep in mind I did not find The Tech Report until December of last year so I have no clue what this Frankenbot thing is all about.

For the month of October, some of us switch over and fold for TR Frankenbot. It's just for fun but it's open to everybody and it's neat to see Frankie come alive and blast to the top of all the production rankings for at least one month.

Since I have only one machine, switching over for part or all of a month will hurt my own production statistics, but those points will go to TR Frankenbot who is a member of team Tech Report anyway. And the important thing is, I'm still generating work for the research projects.

As we get closer, somebody will publish the details and the key code so you can generate bonus points.

@Khali -

If BIF's explanation has still left you scratching your head, go here: http://folding.stanford.edu/home/

TR used to have one of the top-ranked Folding@home teams worldwide. Interest has fallen off quite a bit the past couple of years, but there's still a small core group that participates.

Oh, Khali is folding for team TR already; has the basics well under hand. The confusion was only about Frankie. We've been PMing. :)

Edit: Hmmm, I was assuming that Khali is using a passkey, but now that I think about it, I don't know that for certain...

I get it, I'm fully aware of what folding is, been doing it for a couple of months now. I just wasn't sure what Frankenbot was. I had seen it mentioned but wasn't clear on the details. I just find it easier to ask than try to wade through out dated information, dating back to 2004 in some cases, in the folding section of the forums.

Besides, I know I can always get a straight up answer from one of the "Just" brothers. :D

Yes Sir, I have a passkey. Set that up on day one.

I'm interested. I'll have to dig around and see what equipment I can find, but I'll be able to contribute some Core 2 Duo laptops and maybe a GPU. I'll have to check and see how old the card is.

It's been years, but I'll be contributing for the foreseeable future. Come October I'll be throwing my FX4100 and a E-350 APU in for Frankenbot. Looks like an estimated 4k points per day.

I haven't been running Folding for a while... But it's worth setting up again. I can throw a Xeon (quad core workstation), Core i7 (quad core laptop), Core i5 (dual core desktop), and Pentium D (dual core desktop) at it. If I can get them spun up, I have two Pentium III's that might turn in an extra result each every couple of days. I'll start working on it this evening...

Welcome to all. At first I thought this was too early to mention Frankie, but it seems now that it was a good idea after all, since some of us need some lead time to bring some older systems online.

I am currently contemplating building "Version 1" of my server, with the old Q6600 CPU and a new ATI dual GPU. I just paid some bills and think I may be able to swing the necessary cash outlay in a week or two. Just in time for Frankie, I hope!

Got my laptop up and running. Now I am looking to get my old core duo system with its GTX 550 back up and running as well. I was going to put the 550 in my new system and just use it for folding but I figured I would run it in the old system first and see if its even worth messing with first. If the old system does decent work I will just leave it running until it finally dies, probably wont be long.

Frankenbot was originally a project sort of spearheaded by cass, emkubed, idchafee, drfish and others to gather (usually used) hardware by themselves and from fellow gerbils to put together multiple folding nodes to try to boost Team TR's folding output. The idea is if any other gerbils can spare some space, heat capacity, and can afford the electricity bills, the rebuilt nodes can be sent to them to fold under the name "TRFrankenbot". Those core members also run multiple nodes themselves. (I believe cass posted a picture or two but not sure if they are still up.) I was too lazy to go too far back in history, but this is the Frankenbot "rebuilding" thread:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=22447

A few years ago, I believe it was Usacomp2k3 that suggested to play on the term "Frankenbot" and get TR gerbils that normally fold under other names to just switch part/whole of their individual folding farm/garden/machine to fold under that name to make "Frankie" scary. We have a picture of how Frankie scared his way in the charts:

Forum member DancinJack has the passkey. Passkeys are not supposed to be published around so we usually just spamPM him for it. So when you switch your user name you need to switch the passkey as well.

If BIF's commitment is going to pan out and others are throwing in their x17 and A4 WUs, then can we say 20 million points is a good goal for this year?

Thanks for the history and wow, that sure is a scary chart, FF!

But ya gotta chuckle a bit seeing the numbers on the left side of the graph.

Modern hardware today returns an order of magnitude more points than those days.

A reminder about the passkey thing. Everybody should try really REALLY hard to type in the correct spelling for TRFrankenbot, because if people misspell it, then it's harder to see what's really going on with the points.

20M+ points might be a difficult target to meet, but I'm up for any attempt! What did we reach last year?

I'll switch over just as soon as my last September points finish up on 9/30. It's very possible Frankie will awaken from his slumber with his first numbers as early as 03:00 or 06:00 CT on October 1st!

Ah, the glory days... during my battle with drfish we both cracked the top 50 in the world! I actually blew the main fuses in my whole apartment building due to the power draw at one point. No one had power in my whole building!

Sadly, my last legacy machine running the client went offline this month. My name is grey for the first time in 10 years.

I bet we could really ramp things up with a bit of promotion on the main TR page. Get a story up there, maybe along the lines of TRFrankenbot versus the NSA for some humor. I bet half the people that read the main page have no clue about the folding team. I didn't for several months and I actually read the forums every day. I simply avoided this section of the forums because no one seemed to use it and the one time I did look the first several posts were from 2005-2008. Seemed like a dead area to me at first. Only after several posts were made that it got my attention about two months ago.

Some one light a fire under Scott and get him busy writing a article for us. We need some publicity!!! :D

Point values may be different, but the scale can be the same. Once October 1 comes around, Frankie's line will shoot straight up and remain so for the month, then drop off again, producing the menacing pattern again. ;)

I'm about ready to roll. Only issue is I can't get my old core duo system to boot. I may just yank the GTX 550 out of it and toss it into my current gaming rig and run it that way. I'm sure it will contribute more than the core duo will any way.

Anything I need to do to get the 550 running along side my 680 if I go that route?

I've have a Core 2 Duo ([email protected]) and a Core 2 Quad ([email protected]) with a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS online. The 8800 GTS isn't getting any work though.

I'll have a couple of other systems coming online in the next couple of days.

I've been rather busy with a lot of other stuff, and haven't had time to put together the dedicated folding systems I was planning on. I do have an FX-8320 I can throw into the fray though. Hopefully I'll also have time to bring up a second FX-8320 (and maybe a 1090T?) over the next few days.
