7870 GHz for $175

Thu Jun 06, 2013 8:10 am

Well if you thought last week's deal of a 7870 for $187.50 was good, Newegg now has a Sapphire 7870 GHz Edition for $215 after MIR. You can bring that total down to $175.89 using promo code EMCXPXP25 (ends June 12). It also comes with the AMD game bundle including 4 games: Crysis 3, Bioshock, Tomb Raider, and Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon. The Amazon.com value of those 4 games is $155 on it's own. Now that's a GREAT deal.

Nice. I picked it up for closer to $200 a few weeks ago and that was before it came with Crysis 3 also. This is possibly the best 7870 (Pitcairn) on the market right now -- much better than the XFX 7870 that was listed a few days ago anyway.

What's the fan noise like? I'd rather pay another $20-$30 for a card that comes with a quiet fan. A fan should not even be heard when the card is running at idle loads, and yet, finding a card that meets this specification is often a challenge.

I couldn't tell you the dB the fans are running at, but I'm a stickler for a quiet machine at idle. I can not hear my Sapphire 7870 at idle.

At load it's a different story. It's by no means loud but, when running tomb raider at ultra say, they become the loudest fans in my case. Again, not enough to distract you but enough that if you pause the game you might find yourself hearing it.

I've generally been pleased with Sapphire's cooling solutions. Their Dual-X and Toxic (vapor chamber) coolers are usually of decent design and higher quality than Powercolor, MSI etc. (I only buy 7970, 7950 and 7850 models so can't say anything about the 7870)

XFX seem to make well-engineered coolers but I'm always displeased by their fan profiles.
Asus' DirectCU II is probably the best retail air-cooling solution (but also the bulkiest).

Interesting. I would agree that Powercolor designs are usually pretty lackluster. But XFX's recent coolers, at least on the higher TDP cards like HD 7970 (ie, Double D) have been pretty horrible. I think one underestimated OEM in this regard recently is Gigabyte. Their Windforce triple fan low-profile desings, while a bit flimsy, have been great performers, and quiet. And can cool as well as the more bulky triple slot coolers while being double slot designs. Their new version of this cooler for the GTX 770 seems pretty great too.

Oh, I forgot about Gigabyte's Windforce coolers - I had four of those 7970's on order but they were delayed for stock reasons so I switched them to XFX Black Editions which ran very very cool but were really loud under load. Good job they sit in a renderfarm in a massively noisy server room and it doesn't matter ;) The Windforce dual-fan coolers are also some of the quietest Nvidia options too.

I normally buy Sapphires just because I have yet to find a bad Sapphire. Other brands have made both better and worse cards, but Sapphire products seem to be consistently decent in terms of noise levels and build quality.

This same card is on sale again for newegg's 48 hour 4th of July sale. Enter promo code EMCXNXV23 and $15 MIR to make the final price $174.19 (ends midnight 7/3/2013). As TR mentioned earlier, the full Never Settle bundle is no longer available for the 7870 on newegg, but you still get Crysis 3. I'd say this drops this deal from great to decent. Keep in mind that the next cheapest 7870 is $200 after MIR though, and prices go all the way up to ~$230.

The 7870 is on par with the GTX 660 which regularly go for $180 - $190 after MIR and include Metro - Last Light. I own the Asus GTX 660 and am very pleased with it. (even though I bought it before the Metro deal started)

I can't speak for the 7870 cards, but my HIS 7850 2GB card is quite quiet. I don't hear anything on load and even though I don't play hard core games I do play some games like Guild Wars 2, League of Legends, Torchlight 2 and I still don't hear it. Then again my room is cold and my case has excellent air cooling.

Latest deal on the same Sapphire 7870 now $160 after MIR and includes 2 games.
Be aware, the new AMD Hawaii GPU's are due out next month. I take the 7790 launch as a rough indicator of what's to come.

Sorry if I come across as a fanboy, but for another $75 I would get a GTX 760.

I want to buy an AMD card in the future, but with the whole Frametimegate fiasco, I've been turned off of the red team. Hopefully Hawaii will blow my mind and bring me back :). I loved the HD 4870, the pricing and performance were out of this world and ATI really owned nVidia with such exceptional value.

especially in regards to the GTX 760 I can't possibly share this opinion, Kepler's architecture while very good at what it does has shown to have none of the potential of AMD's GCN.

I agree the stuttering issues were concerning, even outright annoying to some while also completely fixable (and have been). the current gen Keplers will never support DX 11.2 like the current gen AMD GCN parts can. Nvidia's 760 and 770 lack frequency potential compared to similarly priced AMD 79xx parts and worse still for Nvidia GCN in in all of the new consoles which has put developer support fully behind it.

2nd part: I don't expect for anyone's "mind to be blown" by the new silicon, it'll be faster, most likely more efficient, it'll use less power and will share the capability of todays GCN parts. now that the software has caught up I see little reason for AMD to reinvent the mid range at their own expense..... Hawaii will be an impressive but evolutionary product that I'm sure AMD hopes will erase the bad taste left from 7xxx's driver woes.

 Yes, yes, DX11.2 is very important to support because it is mandatory and most game developers are already developing games using this particular API version! And yes, AMD's hardware in consoles is very important because it automatically means the game developers will only optimize all of their games for this architecture while totally neglecting Nvidia's! Well, at least that's how it works in your own reality

P.S:I honestly do not understand why are you bringing this redundant nonsense in "hot deals" thread... You have nothing else to do with your spare time other than turn everything into "AMD vs. the evil guys"?

I don't get this either. Why do people try to reinforce their purchasing decisions by "justifying" them constantly in unrelated threads?

I agree that DX 11.2 is worthless, but the fact that the GTX 760 is substantially more money, percentage wise, is valid. It's in a whole other class of cards that shouldn't be compared to the "under $200" cards.

(pecks at calculator) $250 for a GTX 760 - $160 for a 7870 = $90 = >50% more cost. Given the 760 is equivalent to a 660Ti / 7950 Boost, it offers only about 20% more performance than a 7870.....so much for your price / performance advantage.

I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy of either team, I buy whatever offers the best price/performance at time of purchase. In fact, I bought a GTX 660 in April for $170 with NO FREE GAMES. That same GTX660 still pops up on newegg sales for the same ~$170 from time to time. Considering the 7870 and GTX 660 offer similar performance, I'd say the 7870 for $160 with 2 free games is the better deal at the moment.

As others have said, the AMD frame latency issues have been fixed since January(ish) for single GPU setups. If you're thinking of the crossfire frame pacing issues, that's been [roughly] fixed for a month. (yes, there's still some work to be done).

+1 on dx11.2

I will never play a dx11.2 game since I do not own Windows8, and never plan to. And I already have a ps4 line up. No xbox this time around.

And thats very sad, because DX11.2 will finally implement the API needed for HW feature we had since 2011 in cards like that AMD 7000.

This was intentional to boost console attractiveness, and soon the windows8 platform. (The new HW VM will let you play large texture set console game on 2GB video cards.. but not on windows7)

Hopefully all the PC gamers that Microsoft is screwing by failing to robustly support PC gaming will reward Microsoft by choosing PS4 if they feel they have to go to console.

With the cheapest Radeon HD7950s being sold at $180AR several times in the past month, I wouldn't pay $175 for an HD7870.

Good advice. Especially considering the video RAM amount on 7950 and the "recommended" requirements of BF4 (and potentially many other games which will be released within a year). "Better to be safe than sorry" and all that

I'm aware, but my trust in AMD is shaken when they allowed the HD 7000 line to live with these issues for over a year. Hopefully Hawaii will be flawless out of the gate.

Sorry for derailing the topic, I'm not trying to troll or anything, I'm just put off of this product line. I argued against teammates and friends who blindly proclaimed "ATI SUXX NVIDIA R0X" and for years and recommended the 48x0 and 58x0 to many of my peers.
