Taking advantage of some sales...

Fri Sep 27, 2013 8:47 pm

And building a new machine. Please take a look and offer any input if you see I can get something better or get a better deal. All prices are from before mail-in rebates.

Tiger Direct - $173.76 w/ Taxes & Shipping
Case: Corsair 650D $150

Microcenter - $232.72 w/ Taxes & in-store pickup
CPU: Intel 4570K $200
DVD Drive: LG 24x $16

Newegg - $929.21 w/ Promo, Taxes, and Shipping
Motherboard: ASUS Z87-A $140
RAM: 16GB Mushkin $160 (-$40 promo)
Video Card: Radeon 7950 $220
SSD: 240GB Kingston $180
HDD: Seagate 1TB $70
PSU: Corsair 650W Gold $120
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Frio $59

Total: $1335.69
Mail in Goodies: $70
+3 games from the 7950

To head off a couple questions, I am pretty set on a mid tower build. I have a few hard drives that are going to migrate. The 650D is my favorite choice in this category.

My RAM is more than recommended in the system guides, but I'm currently using 12GB, and it seems silly to downgrade myself.

I am planning on doing a modest overclock on my CPU, which is why I am getting the aftermarket cooler just in case.

I was a little hesitant on the 7950. I know that AMD has new cards on the way, which is probably part of the reason that the deal is going on now, and I suspect that Nvidia might pull out a deal or two closer to Christmas, but if I build now, the 7950 seems like the best deal...and video cards are easy to replace if I want to upgrade in a year or two. On that note, I am at 1080p right now. I have two monitors, but only ever game on the one.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

What about a Z87 Gryphon from Microcenter? If I'm reading their ad correctly it's only $140 if you buy the CPU from them. That deal has tempted me for several months, but upgrading a perfectly good 2500k is a hard sell even if the Z77 board selection is frustrating.

If you aren't desperate I would hold out for a better GPU deal, like you said there's better stuff on the way which will drive prices down and GPU deals happen often.

Having extra RAM is not a bad thing, it means you're future proofed.

Since I'm using the larger case, I'm going to stick with the ATX board instead of mATX.

Also, with GPU deals, I know that there's a chance for that to happen, but most of AMD's new cards are, from my understanding, rebranded silicon. What I anticipate happening is that the 7950 will be phased out an replaced by something perhaps a little faster at the old price point (around $250-$300), much like what happened with the 7xx series.

1) You'd be remiss not to take advantage of Microcenter's CPU/mobo combo deals. Even if you're dead set on the Asus A87-A, you can get it for $120 with the i5-4670K.

2) I don't think the Corsair 650D is a particularly good deal.

Well that figures. I put in my Newegg order this weekend, and I checked Microcenter for such a bundle deal.

Microcenter always has CPU/mobo combo deals. IMO, it's one of the biggest reasons to shop there. Too bad you didn't see it/know about it. I'm actually surprised nobody at Microcenter tried to upsell you on the deal. Oh well, future reference.
