[Need Help] Would like to build a Gaming pC

Sat Sep 28, 2013 11:53 am

Hi there everyone! I'm Theophilus Nathaniel from Malaysia, I am sorry if my English broke really bad. And I have post my another thread but it says it were sent to Draft. So I'm sorry if I spam a lot but never mind.

You may give some suggestion or some feedback. I have a Gaming PC but it doesn't belongs to me, it belongs to my brother. This is my selection.

Casing - Bitfenix Mini-ITX

Processor - Intel-Core i3-3220

Graphic Card - Gigabyte ATI HD7850

Motherboard - ASUS P8H77-I

Memory Ram - Corsair Vengeance

Hard Disk - Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue

Power Supply - Cooler Master GX 450W

Solid State Drive - Kingmax SMP35 120GB

Monitor - I really want 1920x1080 but I don't want really big inches.

P/S : I'm new in TR Forum and I don't know which section it is.

I'm in Europe and the 7850 is very close in price to the GF660 which is a slightly faster card... don't know how close in price they are in Malaysia but worth looking into if you haven't already.

That looks like a good choice of parts for gaming.

Typical screen size/resolution:

18.5" = 1366 x 768
19" = 1600 x 900 and 1440 x 900
21.5 = 1920 x 1080
23 = 1920 x 1080
24 = 1920 x 1200
27 = 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440

I would go for an Nvidia card with a fully-exhausting blower inside a mITX case because blower coolers tend to produce better results than dual-fan open coolers when there is not much space in your case. The 650Ti Boost 2GB or the 660 are close to an HD7850, There are very few AMD cards with blower coolers, only HIS cards and they are possibly too large for an mITX case (they are 2.5 slots wide).

I'd recommend using a quad core for any gaming PC builds going forward, I have the feeling we will be seeing more multi-threaded games as the Xbone and PS4 come to market.

I think 21.5" monitor is not really big right? BTW I will upgrade it later when the performance of my Gaming PC is decreasing or whatever it is.

BTW, any suggestion for Processor? Intel i3-3220 enough?? or maybe I should upgrade it next time? Is it possible for me to upgrade it next time?

Good advice.
I would also recommend not skipping on video card and starting with at least a 7950, or a similar offering by Nvidia, with at least a 3GB of video RAM.

I, too, would suggest a Core i5 quad-core processor and a Radeon HD7950 graphics card if your budget can stand it.
I'm not wild about the BitFenix Prodigy mini-ITX case. It's larger than many decent micro-ATX cases and almost as large as some ATX cases. I favor micro-ATX because it has 4 PCIe slots instead of the one slot that you get with mini-ITX.

Intel Core i5-3570? If I use the i3-3220, am I able to upgrade to other processor? And, am I able to upgrade everything?

We don't know what your budget is, but for gaming you want to spend the most money on these things, in order of importance:

1) Graphics card.
2) Processor

All the other parts are just there to support those two.
The SSD is nice, but you can save money on memory - look for anything that's 1600MHz CL9 1.5V, don't worry about "Vengeance" or fancy heat-spreaders on your RAM - Crucial usually make good quality basic RAM.

The sweet-spot (performance/cost) is probably HD7950/GTX660Ti, paired with an overclocked i5-4670K running at 4GHz+
Obviously the HD7950/GTX660Ti is much more expensive than the HD7850 you listed, and an i5-4670K almost double the price of an i3. If you can't afford to upgrade both of them, go for the better graphics card first.

If you buy an i3 the H77 board is fine, because it keeps the price low.
If you can afford an i5, get the 3570K and a Z77 motherboard.

The fastest processor you can upgrade to with an H77 s1155 board is the i7-3770 (3.4GHz)
The fastest processor you can upgrade to with a Z77 s1155 board is the i7-3770K (overclocks to around 4.5GHz)
You cannot upgrade to a Haswell (s1150) processor but the performance difference between an i7-4770K and an i7-3770K is very very small.

Unless space is at a premium I would recommend micro-ATX over mini-ITX (both mobo and case). It's slightly larger but cheaper and has better options. Use that savings to get an i5; an i3 is good at what it does but the price jump for a native quad core CPU isn't much. Otherwise that looks like a solid general-use PC (I would hesitate to call it a gaming PC as that usually refers to multiple displays and overclocking).

But I still can upgrade everything right? Like replacing the processor to other one. Or I should make a new PC.

I disagree. "Gaming PC" is any machine running Windows with a decent CPU and GPU. Nothing more.

Yeah, you can run games at 1080p, high details and fluid framerates on even low-end hardware.
High-end stuff only matters if you're a fiercely competitive tournament gamer.

Even a cheap Pentium G-series and a $99 graphics card like the HD7790 will run rings around the outgoing (360 & PS3) consoles.

An HD7790 may not run smoothly at ULTRA SUPER FSAA MEGA TEXURE at 4K resolution, but 50 fps on "high" settings at 1080p are good enough for what most people consider "gaming", especially when consoles have struggled to output 30fps on "minimum" settings at only 720p or even 540p.

You can upgrade as long as the hardware isn't too old, but if you expect to need more power in the near future it make sense to buy it now for 30% more money than buy new components later for 100% more money. Buying cheap stuff and upgrading on the fly used to make sense--I did it myself--but systems don't go obsolete like they used to so a good PC can be seen as more of a medium to long term investment. So you need to figure out what your usage is going to look like, for example if you game on one 1080p and don't expect that to change anytime soon a 7850, 660, whatever should suffice but if you want to buy a new monitor say a year from now you should pay the extra for a card that can do that. Obviously needs change and it's impossible to predict everything but an educated guess will minimize the chances of under- or overspending.

You will be able to upgrade from the i3-3220 to an i5-3xxx or i7-3xxx in the future. But like Novus said, if your budget allows, I'd just get an i5 now and that will last you 4 years or more. After 4 years, your next upgrade would be new CPU, mobo, & DDR4 RAM anyway.

I also agree with Chrispy that a 7790 or 7850 2GB would work just fine at 1080p and high settings on most games. A 7950 might be great for ultra/max settings and >1080p, but if you don't have the budget for that and an i5, I'd get the i5 first. Graphics cards tend to be on a much shorter upgrade cycle (~2 years) than processors.

Bit Fenix Prodigy is basically the same size as a Silverstone TJ08-E or PS07 which are mATX and give you more expansion slots. No-brainer to me, unless you're in love with the Prodigy aesthetic.

1) What's your budget?
2) Where are you shopping? List any online retailers that you'll be using so we can notify you about particularly good/bad deals on hardware.

I agree A good CPU and motherboard will last a lot longer then say a graphics card. My 3yr old p67 2600k system is no slouch and can keep up with any ivy or Haswell cpu in gaming with no problem at all plus with good cooler I can break 5ghz where ivy and haswell are around 4.5ghz. Now my 3 year old 560ti SLI setup is another story. If I was running One 560ti with no SLI I would have had to upgrade my GPU by now but since I am lucky enough 560ti cards in SLI scale to 90% and higher in most situations they are still hanging on and letting me use ultra settings minus Anti aliasing over 2x at 1080p since they only have 1gb of memory per card. But at the time of purchase 2 factory overclocked 560 ti cards outperformed the 1.5 gb gtx 580 by a good bit and where a heck of alot cheaper. Luckily I have not ran into hardly any SLI problems in 3 years and lately with the newer drivers stuttering and tearing seem like a thing of the past.

I would love to get 2 4gb GTX 760 cards and run them in SLI. I am sure i would outperform a GTX 780 or Titan and have more memory then a 780 and close to the titans 6gb buffer.

But I have to wait to see the performance of AMDs new cards before I make any choices.
