The mixed build

Sat Oct 05, 2013 6:10 pm

Hey guys,

Just wanted your advice on my build that I've got going. I don't really want to spend too much money on this one so I pulled it pretty much straight from the econobox save for a few things.

Updated!

    Asus Z87-Pro
    i7-4770K
    Corsair Vengence 16GB
    Samsung 840 Pro Series 512GB
    Corsair TX750w PSU
    Corsair Carbide 200R
    Asus DVD Burner
    Arctic Silver 5
Cooler Master RR-H101 80mm CPU Cooler
    Win 8

The monitor will most like be a Sony 32" LED Smart TV, as I need something to do 2 jobs and keep costs down.

Feel free to fire away with any advice/changes. Primary usage of this PC will be playing BF4 and anything else great that comes out. I don't code/dev/edit or do any of that stuff (actually I might do some small coding as I'm going to start learning, but this will be fine).

The build looks great, but that i3 will most likely bottleneck the 780. Nothing to cry about, but keep in mind I doubt you'll get the 100 percent best performance out of it. BF3 beta is awesome btw, although I have to run it on low :3

I'm skipping out on the 2TB at the moment but when I go for more storage I'll def grab the 4TB.

Any suggestions on alternatives to the i3 then? I could probably switch up the mobo to the Asus Z87-Pro (the built in wifi is a big pull) and run say a i5-4670K (I have no idea TBH, reccomend something that isn't too much more expensive than my i3 haha) ?

If you could upgrade to a Z87+4670K, that would be awesome. I see no reason why you shouldn't, although there may be slightly cheaper alternatives. Just make sure your PSU has enough juice ^^

I'd try to bump it up to a quad, but other than that, I don't see anything I'd jump up and down about changing.

Fantastic. Newegg has a deal going on for a i7-4770K/Asus Z87 Pro/Corsair Vengence 16Gb/Corsair TX750 for $750 odd. Might look into that. What are the benefits/downfalls of the i7 over a i5-4670k?

Hyperthreading, so potentially more throughput on highly threaded apps/games.

The wife has a 4770K and she loves it but I can only compare it to my 2700K...and for CPU-constrained stuff it's quite a bit faster even at stock versus mine at 4.4 GHz.

Between that response and a few comparison reviews it looks like I'll go with the i7.

Before I read anyone else's response:

  1. Drop the 840 Pro to a non-Pro, unless you really expect to be doing a lot of seqential writing to the SSD. It's a lot of extra cost for not a massive real-world gain, sequential-writes being the exception.
  2. Drop the G.SKILL fancy Ripjaws RAM down to something cheaper. DDR3 1600 CL9 is all you need to look for, and Crucial make some pretty cheap RAM with those specs and a lifetime guarantee. Maybe consider 16GB if you're working with 3D models or huge multi-layer image files
  3. Get an i5 instead of an i3. If you're encoding, rendering, compiling or gaming it'll be worth the extra. There's a $15 promo on the i5-3570 right now.

Otherwise looks good. You could also save by going mATX motherboard and case, though it'll only be a few bucks.

Oh, nevermind - I see you're done ;)
The i7 is about 15% better than the i5 for productivity, (rendering/compiling/encoding) it offers practically nothing over an i5 for gaming.

If you haven't already bought a reasonable cooler (the CoolerMaster Hyper 412S is a pretty good value, 1150-compatible option) you need to get one for overclocking:
4.2GHz should be possible without making it much hotter or noisier - the key is not to boost voltage if you want to keep things cool and quiet.

Keyboard I'm unsure off, but the MS Sidewinder does look pretty good. I have a Logitech MX510 that I have used for years, that I love. So maybe a replacement for that in wireless form.

Headphone wise I'd LOVE to find a set of wireless ones that aren't terrible due to interference, but I doubt they exist, so I'll settle for a set of sennheisers pc350s?

Chrispy - Thanks for the advice, the ram that is included is part of the bundle, so I may as well. As for the cooler, I've never found the need to overclock any of my machines so I'm hoping my current cooler that I chose should be sufficient.

For keyboards, check out mechanical switches. I'm using a Razer BlackWidow with Cherry Blues. The sound took some getting used to, since it is noticeably louder, but the tactile feedback is excellent.

There aren't a lot of wireless mechanical keyboards out there, at least not that I've seen, but it's always worth giving one a feel.

Crap. Now I need a new monitor. 32" is going to be too big so I'm going to shell out for a 27". Any recommendations?

stuntmonkeynz,

forgive me if I missed something but you mentioned BF4, yet there's no discrete GPU in your list? You're going to want to add one to the list, unless you already own a power graphics card.

Unless you're using a TV or a monitor with built-in speakers, you might as well be using DVI.

Well you can get an HDMI to DVI cable for that.

Otherwise, check reviews on the one you linked or check out offerings from Dell, HP, and ASUS. Those brands will definitely cost more, but they are more likely to have convenience features like HDMI ports.

Good point.

The Dell 29" Ultrawide IPS looks pretty tempting too.
