Windshield Cleaning

Wed Oct 09, 2013 8:38 pm

So, every time I try to clean my windshield on the inside I always leave marks. I generally just use paper towels and Windex. Any recommendations on better methods to use?

Glass Plus may work better in that application.

Make sure to do it in the shade as well, as sunshine on the windshield causes any cleaner to evaporate and leave a film before it can be completely wiped off. My personal favorite windshield cleaner is Stoner's Invisible Glass.

Yeah, I agree that Invisible Glass is an effective product.

When it comes to the outside windows though, it's straight to the Soft Scrub. Doesn't scratch the glass (though be careful around the edges because it will scratch clear-coat) and does wonders on old car-wash pseudo-wax, accumulated Rain-X from the orange wiper fluid, bugs, tar balls, and most any other thing that can accost exterior glass here in New England. Takes a lot of rinsing, though, preferably with a hose.

Oh, and even though Glass Plus and Invisible Glass both come as pop-up pre-moistened wipes I've never had one bit of success with either, leaving more smears and streaks than when I started. If you're going to have to dry the glass with paper towels anyway, why not just go straight to the spray can/spray bottle? Save the pop-up stuff for Armor-All and the dashboard or other plastic interior bits.

EDIT: When it has to be absolutely positively 100% clean with no streaks/smears, look no further than these:

That's what my Nana told me but I think that worked in a day when both newsprint and ink were of much higher quality.

You just need a lot of newspaper. We go through a whole grocery store circular sometimes.

I drove garbage trucks for a few years. The front end packers used to get all kinds of crap on the windows and we used Bon Ami pretty well exclusively. Works pretty well that stuff.

Yes, like others have said - try Invisible Glass and do it in shaded area. For cleaning the exterior glass - try Prestone's Bug Wash windshield washer fluid, it works extremely well with sticky stuff and bird poop. Just buy a cheap spray bottle for more precise application and then use the rest of the fluid to fill up your washer fluid reservoir.
